More mother nature then the CPR, which put a stop to the grade, snow slides and fires.

The grade remained level along the side of the Mountain for about 3 miles.

The question is, would this grade have been built to serve the Slocan Star via a switchback,

or was it the start of the proposed extension to Silverton (not Colorado)

the grade would drop close to 1800 Feet to arrive in Silverton.

Another project at the time in 1908 was a new Wye being built in Cody,

there the grade at least had ties laid, rail was never laid.
