I installed some MRC "Sheer Brillance" sound decoders in a couple of On30 locos a while back and they sounded every bit as good as a much more expensive Tsunami board. The key is using the right size (biggest that will fit) speaker and if possible building an enclosure around the speaker. While this isn't possible in a Porter or Davenport, just how LOUD does a loco need to be. We almost got run over by a steam loco once, the sound was so low that we didn't hear it until it was almost too late. This was a big 2-8-2 on the Texas State RR. The loudest sounds were the clanking of siderods and banging of rail joints.

It doesn't matter if you win or lose, its' how you rig the game.
