Not 100% on this.
Long time since I read the book.
But.
I believe the locomotives were moved in 'parts'...
...& assembled/re-assembled on the other side.

Not sure if they used the cable to do this...
...or if the 'parts' were moved by a different route.

The cable, of course, was the most efficient way of getting the lumber moved.

A very unique & interesting operation, the Mich. Cal.
May just have a browse through Polkinghorn later :bg:

I think I would have been TERRIFIED to ride the cable though ! ;)
