I'm glad you now have a path forward and have picked a scale that you are happy with, and one that can give you satisfaction into the future. 


I'm not sure if you know about this outfit http://www.larrygscale.com/  They might have some scenery stuff that you can use.  I don't know how they compare range and price wise from what you have available on the west coast. 

They used to carry a range of figures for 1:24 model cars that appear to be no longer in their catalogue. I got a several forklift driver figures from them some years ago. This seated resin figure "Earl" had several poseable arns and some different heads that would probably have made him useful for a driver for a small locomotive.
