Michael,
one option is replacing the ancient magnet in the motor with neo magnets, according to some articles this greatly reduces current draw and improves performance.  Doesn't cost much either!  :)

I replace the modern ferrite magnets with neo in the can motor for my monorails and it reduces current draw by about 35%!

Michael says very clearly that he is using a Bachmann 'Brill Trolley' chassis.

It is obviously a pretty modern, should be smooth as silk motor.

I don't imagine, if it is undamaged, it needs more than a teeny weeny amount of current to operate.

Certainly easy fare for a correctly functioning & fully charged battery, I would think.

This has gotta be 'a silly' if you ask me.

Have you checked the continuity of all the solder joints, cables & plugs/sockets ?

I've had a fine-wire snap inside the insulation before.

They can be either non-conducting, intermittent, or high-resistance.

Did you use all the same wiring etc. when running the motor successfully using the MRC pack ?

Si, Woodie, and others,

I have a plan (Great...Custer had a plan too).  All these little problems have been just too much for my little brain to handle.  I'm going to take a stab at installing a new motor.  For whatever reason I have a power truck minus the motor.  The gears are there just no motor.  Decades ago I had a HO trolley layout and picked up a few of these Bachmann Brill Trolleys.  Anywho, I have a teeny motor that has a gearing of 80:1, and some spare gears that look like they'll mesh fine, and will fit the shaft of the new motor.  I think Si was talking about them for his rail truck.  I've already tested the new motor with the Li-Po batteries I have and it works fine.  This thing should crawl extremely slowly.

Oh, I also managed to fry the board from the RC car.  But, it was only $5 so no great loss.  Got a better one coming in the mail.

I'm just stubborn, and don't want to give up on this rail truck since I've built the body already.  I'd like to re-motor the Tyco Shifter if I can find the correct motor to fit.

Thank you to everyone for their suggestions and insight.

Hi Michael

Just a thought.

But instead of keep frying cheap R.C. car boards ...

... you could go 'modular' ...

... and get a sensibly priced, high-quality, receiver & E.S.C ...

... for only £3.84p & £2.54p inc. P&P respectively.

I seriously doubt whether even a short order chef could FRY these lil' gems !

I wouldn't wanna be frying too many high cost R.C. boards myself.

But the nice thing about these is, other than the sensible price ...

... with what is probably a bomb proof E.S.C. and seperate high-quality receiver ...

... you don't have to throw $$$ worth of expensive blown-up microchips in the bin, just to experiment.

frequency ? ... Frequency ?? ... FREQUENCY ?? !! ...

Hi Herb

It is FREQUENTLY available on evilBay for pennys ...

... and operates on the GIGACHEAP FREQUENCY !! ;)

( cue the next 10 pages, on Wi-Fi interference ...

... being able to control a dozen locos, all at once ...

... the desperate need to flash LEDs on & off ...

... the lack of complex computer programming options ...

... will it work surrounded by a few thousand cellphones ? ...

... batteries bursting into flames ...

... etc. etc. etc. )

Si,

That just might be the way to go.  I use RC cars because I know everything I need will be there, and they're basically on the cheap side.

I found that FlySky receiver for about $6 (£4.59) on evilbay.  Would'nt have any problem installing that in the cargo area of my rail truck, or putting it in a tender on a steam engine.  What kind of ESC are you using?  And, what about a transmitter?

Bachmanns On30 engines have gotten kinda expensive.  Was thinking of picking up a Model Power switcher since they look like they don't need a high starting voltage.  Does anyone have any suggestions on a HO scale donor engine for 1/35 scale?

Hi Michael

You can buy the simple 'FlySky' transmitter & receiver in a 'twin-pack'.

I've seen this advertised on evilBay for only £19.95p inc. P&P for the pair.

Fully featured speed-control, backwards & forwards, slow to fast, no problem at all.

Don't buy the more expensive one, with the Transmitter LCD-screen ... waste of money.

If you fit a simple & easy to flip on/off switch on your locos, as Herbie suggests ...

... then you can control ALL your locos individually, from the 1 'FlySky' transmitter.

Simply flipping the loco on/off switch when required.

If you think you can control ALL your locos ALL at once ... GOOD BLOOMIN" LUCK MATE ! ;)

I tried controlling 2 locos at once ... and crashed BOTH of them !! :f:

Further locos would then only require the £3.84p receiver & £2.54p E.S.C for an install.

Using a single 3.7-Volt LiPo battery & a 'step-up regulator' to 9-Volts, seems like the way to go to me.

Therefore you won't be having any 'high starting Voltage' problems whatsoever.

Also you will most likely say goodbye to any more blown-up R.C. gear ...

... since these components will be VERY HARD TO DESTROY from over Voltage/current etc.

If somehow you do manage to destroy them, they are EVEN CHEAPER than a cheap R.C. car to replace ...

... and WAY WAY WAY cheaper than all the mega expensive brands/rigs out there.

I can't find a single 'downside' to all this personally.

( I'm sure someone will find a few though :y: )

Si,

Is this what you are talking about?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Flysky-FS-GT2G-2-4GHz-2CH-AFHDS-Transmitter-FS-A3-Receiver-For-Car-and-Boat-/302244618215?hash=item465f2edfe7:g:kBYAAOSw4YdYx~qg

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Quality-RC-ESC-20A-Brush-Motor-Speed-Controller-w-Brake-for-RC-Car-Boat-Tank-F-/272700034112?hash=item3f7e304c40:g:~twAAOSw8lpZMn-g

That's about $30 total which is doable, and a lot cheaper than DelTang.

Anything else I would need?

I think I'll try this on my next RC conversion.  Just need to find a suitable engine that I can convert to 35n2.
