Howdy Helmut, not shown is the cable & hook.
The hook simply hooks up to the knuckle coupler on the car and the winch hauls the cars (2 at a time) up the incline.
No, I didn't make this to work, those things were in my previous life...now I use imagination.
The mill/smelter only has room for 2 cars at a time anyway.
Besides this takes more time in the operation scheme and in my model world, there are no time constrictions.
I did have 2 crewmen stationed on the incline, one holding the cable & hook,
but the local monster cat got on the incline and "scared them away!"

The missing crewmen are shown on the incline track before they took off to parts unknown.

Here is a view of the "car stop" on the incline.
Using a ground throw, the "stop" is raised to keep the cars from rolling down,
and then lowered to allow them to be moved.

And here is the monster cat, napping by the incline. BAD KITTY!

Yeah, I got the rope and winch bit thanks Woodie,
but I was just thinking of the shoving of the wagons up the incline as far as their stop before the rope was attached.
That's quite a steep grade even for a Shay to control.

Doug, that's why I built the idler car.
The Shay doesn't go very far up the incline using it.

Many narrow gauge roads used idler cars,
mostly to perform dual gauge switching.

Yeah, that's why I said what a good idea!

Reckon we're singing from the same hymn sheet,
just the UK and US words are slightly different - but what's new!

Been thinking that the railway needs an idler car with 2 trucks and maybe 12 to 14 feet long. Then the loco won't be anywhere close to elevated track...and I just want to build something new anyway. I need to keep that messy workbench looking messy a while longer.
