Lucas,

Did not forget about your question, just busy with work.

Image below may help. I added 2 pair of switches that create 2 runarounds on your last posted layout.

The schematic in the middle explains the runaround concept. Say you want car "A" into spot "B". Loco pulling or pushing train is green, caboose is black. Loco would uncouple and "RUNAROUND"string of cars. Then get behind caboose and push train with car "A" to "B" position, leave car "A" behind, and return back to starting position. Loco then uncouples and runs back around to front, picks up remaining train and heads on to other tasks.

That is the basic "RUNAROUND" / siding use. It helps untrap a Loco and assists in spotting cars in facing switches. Many great books on this subject. Once you get the basics, you can look at any printed layout and work thru its operation. Look for article's on Linn Wescotts "TimeSaver" and variants. This switching puzzle helps understand allot of the principals. This is like a Rubik's Cube for trains.

The sky is the limit beyond that.

But no the "KISS" method comes in. To complex it does not have that back country feel, to simple and the trains go round and round. All depend on what you want.

This is the fun, buried in the madness.

Thanks for the explanation!! But I was thinking I will not have much space for a second track there, if I do it... will be a 17" long section. So I thought another second track conecting the 9mm track with the 16,5 track at the freight dock.

Lucas,

If the building at the upper side something industrial, I would prefer BMWorks solution, as it looks more like a factory siding. Your draft of the second track suggests more a station.
If you move the tunnel at the right side of the harbour (to the right, near the point marked "00") you will have enough space for the second track at the harbour.

And of course I like the second 0n18 track at the upper side. How about to connect both? Maybe you can manage to adapt the different heights. In the upper right corner would be a source of raw material (like a forest or a mine), this material will be processed at the industrial building in the upper right (sawmill, smelter, stamp mill) and shipped with the 0n30 line to somewhere on your layout or with the 0n18 line to the harbour. With one small loco at each end you can make push/pull trains.

Here's a roughly sketch:

Sure like the looks of this one. Really like the water/wharf areas. Has a whole lot of potential. I am in agreement on the tree comment. I started making trees for a friends layout and we thought that we would eventually have to order materials by the truck load once we got a very small section populated with pines and aspens. The tree thing can add up a lot of time and material. I would have to make a deal with the devil to be able to purchase the required amount of trees for my layout and it it really small.
