Gardenville and anybody else interested ---

In response to talk in the chat Sunday nite June 6 2010,
I went to the "ask the Bachmann" train site.

There is a thread there about problems and fix for Shay gears breaking and cracking.

For those that do not want to take the trucks apart,
somebody mentions a specific glue, other than zap types, to fix cracked gears.

Here is the link to that thread

Re chat Sunday nite.......  could not remember the Shay.

I have all the PSC precision scale brass parts to make a special Shay.

It's not a WSLC Shay, it's a Mich-Cal Shay #2 that I will do,
using the Bachmann On30 Shay as the motive supplier.

Mike-no matter what is on "the net", the Bachmann pinion gears (and most any gear) cannot be glued back together and operate properly.
It is best to get new gears... wherever they can be found.

BTW-the Mich Cal is Shay #2, the Bachmann On30 model can be made into a reasonable replica
(if you discount the 6" gauge difference) since both are (#2 IS STILL AROUND) T boiler jobs.
I believe I have seen one done up with the PSC parts and I remember that it looked pretty good.

I really like the look of the Mich-Cal Shay.
PSC has all the brass parts in their catalogue to make one.
I ordered and received them all about 2 years ago.

I have that picture of the Bachmann On30 based Mich-Cal conversion.
I believe it was Keith Wiseman who built it.
He had a whole pile of those brass bodies and floor plates along with the rear bunker setup.

If that is the same link you e-mailed me Mike,
it shows Bachmann made up some new gears which carry a bit more bulk than the old problem gears.

Hopefully, that will cure the problem.

Kinda urks me that you have to spend another 26 bucks and shipping, to repair a factory defect,
but at least there is a solution now available.

I may order a set from them to check them out...

I still plan on waiting for NWSL to release something,
they normally offer metal replacements which I would prefer.

Here is a cropped and enlarged image made from one of the posted photos,

showing the difference in the bulk of the new gears,

new on top.

On the Bachmann site an admin posted this....

Dear All,
The service department has a good supply of replacement gears for these locos.
If you need gears, call and discuss your specific needs.
Thanks!
the Bach-man

MY 2 CENTS-everybody...I mean EVERYBODY who can prove that they own Bachmann On30 Shays,
and Climaxes also, should get these gears as a FREE REPLACEMENT,
and further, for everybody's hassles and disappointment with what should be a good thing...
Bachmann should send everyone a free loco!
I know this is pie in the sky, but at least..the gears should be free.

Next problem will be plastic universals and sliding box joints...
and all the cheap plastic gears inside the drive system (from motor worm to crankshaft).
These will wear out also (mine already have too much slop).
I replaced the universals and sliding box joints with PSC metal parts...
but the gears are "going south" now. Lousy engineering for such a nice loco.

I will run these locos until they run no more and then gripe some more...get ready!

Who says that NWSL aka OSO publishing is EVER EVER going to make these,
steel--brass ? gears for the Shay, Climax and maybe someday a Heisler.

Have they said they will. ???

If they did make them, what tooling would they need to make these and how expensive is it.

The problem with working with parts this small,
is being able to manufacture them at a price so they will sell.

This cannot be easy,
otherwise somebody would have taken on the problem to produce them and make some $$$$$$$$$.

Not real sure what would be involved,
but at least the gears can be straight cut which would drop the initial cost.

Mike-dollars and time are involved with making such parts.
I personally know a fine modeler who has the ability to make such gears (I know, he made my gears) but time and money is the thing.
OK, the Bachmann On30 Shay can be bought for 90 bucks on the net, the gears would cost that much, maybe more.
Model railroaders are not of a mind to buy stuff to make their locos run better if it costs more than the loco did to begin with.
I would hold on until NWSL has the gears available.

And for that "Bachmann Heisler"...I wouldn't hold my breath.
Bachmann took a bath on the articulated, it is selling like iceboxes in the arctic.
Just my opinion.
