Thanks Si for the comments,

I'm starting to think I should not have fixed it.

BUT there is a project on the go at the moment to replace the Shay,

it's top secret but will be revealed when the time is right.

:dt:  L:  :dt:

Hi guys,

I picked up a Shay a couple years ago for $100 with DCC and sound,
it was a great deal and I knew I would use it some day.

Up until yesterday it sat in a box untouched since I got it.

I got a Bachmann EZ Command DCC controller just to test my trains,
and sure enough, my Shay has so many cracked gears it won't even move.

I've read a lot about replacement gears,
but the most up to date information I can find is from like 2015.

What's the most up to date way to remedy these cracked gears?

Thank you.

Sean,

You can buy new, much better gears,
(than the original gears)
from Bachmann.

They are around the $20 mark.

I fitted five sets to my Shays,
and have had no failures since replacing them.

They do get a lot of use,
and that was a few years ago.

........Peter

The job is easy to do.

My advice, order the drive line clips with the new gears.

The clips have very small legs, who will very often break when removed.

These are the needed gears:

I ordered the parts, on their way.

I took the trucks and drive shafts off...

but I lost track of which truck is the front, and which is the rear.

I cant tell them apart, I don't see any differences.

Does it matter which is which?

Checked mine,
so far I do not see any difference on the front and back trucks.

Only if the drive shafts are mounted, there is a difference.

I can post some pictures if that helps?

That would be appreciated.

I suppose from a manufacturing stand point,
it would make sense to have them be identical,
so you only need one mold...
