US 0 scale 1/4" to ft

European 0 scale is 7mm/ft

H0 3.5mm/ft

00 scale 4mm/ft

009 is 4mm/ft running on N scale track (narrow gauge)

So what would a monorail be?

On0? or On as n -->0? :us:

Is it any wonder newbies to this hobby stay confused?

Modelers who have been into it for awhile ought to reject LETTER designations and use the actual scale ratio. It would be a bold move if Freerail's various forum parts were changed to RATIO and ditched all letters. And Freerailers started using ratios as well.

I know Woodie does it with 1:35. And Harold does it with 1:55. But alas, it's difficult to teach old flea bag dogs new tricks...

I have a monorail and it is called the Boquillas Prismoidal Railroad...it is 1:35 scale..no gauge unless you measure the width of the A frame side runners and they are 6 feet apart.

I don't know about Harold's 1:55 scale, but 1:35 scale has long been a military scale and close by-1:32 scale or #1 Gauge, is one of the oldest model railroad gauges there is. Unk uses #1 gauge with 1:29 scale...and of course, DW runs on #1 or 45MM gauge...it ain't confusing to us old farts.

My point was that it's much easier to categorize by numerical sequence than it is by a hodge-podge list of letters. If Nogales is working in 1:64, you in 1:35, Harold in 1:55, me in 1:17... it's easy to determine which scale is the smallest and upward. With LETTERS that sequencing is impossible as they follow no logical sequence.

I'm not saying that new modelers can't figure it out in time. It would be simpler using the RATIO system instead.

And yes, you are an old fart. I'm almost an old fart. :)

DW-actually, I DO agree with you. I have been in this hobby for a little while and it seems that I still learn new stuff. Did you ever hear if T scale? This is some kind of earring sized train scale. And I still am not sure about F scale..is it some type of grading system? I do understand what D scale is...it's your's. I suppose that I am in C scale-crazy. And then we still have differences between British HO and N and US versions thereof...and O scale VS O scale...Huh?

As Harold sez-"we don't need no stinkin' letter!"

F scale is 1.20n3. Then you have a few F scalers working in standard gauge. Track is 64mm between railheads. G scale is 1.22xxxx. Then there is 1:24 'G' scale. And SE... Seven Eighths or 1.13.7n2...

My D scale was tongue in cheek. I actually changed the official title of my blog to 17n30 Daze to reflect my chosen scale. Harold nailed it on the head. NO stinkin' letters. (_!_)

I suggest 55n3 be know as "H"  scale. H for "harold".

JK

ratios are the best scale designation there is. They make calculations incredibly easy and intuitive.

:bg: Are you going to nap on a full size sofa or would that be a half scale or love seat?I  guess you could also do it on a 1/4 scale or Lazy-Boy as some refer to it.
