I am told the new look for Freerails will be up and running within the next 24 hours.

Things are going to look different, but the functions are going to be the same, along with some extra features.

Please take some time to have a good look around.

We are, like you, trying to take things in and learn.

There are new methods of posting pictures which allow you to post photo's to your post but still leaves you the option to use Photobucket if you desire.( See Gallery )

Let the fun begin.

We are having a few problems getting the New Site up and running.

Our band width had exceeded the allowable amount with our old provider, thus troubles working with it.  Problem has been solved.

Now all we have to do is set-up the "GALLERY" which is a add on that will handle photo posting, and give you greater control of your picture file.

Jim from UltraBB has been working on our site for best part of the day, getting set-up with a minimum of confusion for us.

Bare with us, its happening

I expected thing to have a few hiccups, and I am sure you did also

What are your thoughts on the new look.

Wow-the dadgum thing works! Now, what's this about photos? Do we still need PB to store them? Or can we just go from "desktop" to website? It all looks OK to me..

It's noticeable just how quick the migration has been - and just how well the site seems to be working, immediately after the move.

(Some members here will know that a lot of sites have encountered loads of problems with moves - the fact that this one has gone so smoothly speaks volumes ...)

As for the look of the new site, it's clearly laid out and easy to follow - and the key site / posting functions are easy to find and use.

I'm sure we could all think of extra features we'd like to see on any site. (In my case, this might include a "report post" flag, to make it easier to alert the FreeRails admin / moderation team to the {thankfully rare} posts that clearly don't belong here.)

I'm sure we've all got our wish lists - but the most important wish list is that this excellent site continues - and that all the features that are on this site continue to work. I'm happy that this is the case - and I enjoy seeing (and learning from) what all the real members post on this site.

Speaking personally, I think congratulations are in order - to everyone who's made it happen (whether these people are in the FreeRails team, or working for the hosting company).

I don't know who's done what - said what - or made what decisions. Actually, I don't particularly wish to know - it's none of my business. All I know is that a number of people have put in a lot of hard work - and have worked together - to ensure that everything all comes together.

(That - and, of course, I also know that I'm grateful to everyone concerned, for their efforts.)

In other words, it's all very impressive.

Long may it continue.

All the best,

Huw.

There has been a few hiccups but all praise should go to the UltraBB host, and in particular Jim Hale.

Jim has been there for us at all times of the day, he even fell asleep on the job. Think we are on the home run but there will still be few things to look for in the next week or so.

Thank-you for your kind words.

Use the "g" button that appears in the toolbar if you didn't. Makes it a snap.

OK, I am a DOOFUS! I don't know what the G spot or whatever is...Now, can photos be uploaded from my computer or will I still use PB which I am familiar with? If I can send directly from the puter...then HOW THE HECK IS IT DONE! Please explain this in PLAIN UNADULTERATED ENGLISH, no puterese or letters, etc. Geez, maybe I will just continue to upload to PB (whom I pay) and do things the way I know.

Stay cool, help is on its way.

Open the gallery from the link that jim has set up.

Find the picture in your Computer,  and check the size as you would have done for Photobucket.  Freerails has a maximum size of 800 wide.

Then go the tool bar ( Just above your post and on the right hand side ) You will see a letter G. click on that, now go to your gallery file and click on the picture you want then upload. Your done.

Don't fight it, just go with the flow.

I understand that when you add pictures to the gallery it retains them, so you end up with a library of your selected shots

I believe Jim is going to set up the buttons for the Gallery when he get time to come up for air.

Don is working on it feverishly right now Woodie. He has been getting up in the middle of the night to get the whole changeover going and I imagine that he is pretty pooped by now. We can live for a week without chat--it will come-- but lets take it easy on Donald--he is going above and beyond what should be expected for what he is paid.

New site seems great- so far everything that is enabled or installed works fine.

THANK YOU DON!

The information re Flashchat has saved us a mucho worko

The word is it should be up and running sometime Sunday your time ( Monday in my part of the world )

Hoping its up in time for chat, I am sure people will have a bucket load of questions.

Glad you liked the Gallery. We should have the buttons for Gallery operating about the same time as Chat.

This whole new site thing has fired up better than I thought. Thanks to Jim Hale at Data 1 systems and UltraBB. He has been great.

Hi Don,

There is no need to check the image size.

The Gallery on here automatically resizes images to 800 max for you when you upload. Or to whatever other size you want to set in the Gallery Admin.

But don't expect it to resize massive pictures of many thousands of pixels wide, otherwise you will need to ask Jim to allow more memory for the script in the ini_set command.

Don, if you join the UltraBB owners club at:

 http://www.ultrabb.net/forum/

you will get lots of friendly help with such things, and how to customize the page templates on here to get Freerails exactly as you want it. For example you can have lots of pictures in a side column, as on this UltraBB board:

Hi d u,

If your picture is more than 800 wide the system will automatically resize it down to 800 wide when you upload it. You don't have to do anything.

Likewise if your picture is more than 600 high the system will automatically resize it down to 600 high when you upload it. You don't have to do anything.

If it's less than 800 wide and less than 600 high it will leave it as it is.

So if you want a smaller picture, you must reduce it yourself to the size you want before uploading.

regards,

Martin.

Hi Todd,

It doesn't have to be all blue. If you go to: http://freerails.com/my_account.php?edit_preferences=1

you can choose from 4 different Board Themes for your own viewing, in the drop-down list.

Click Save to make the change. You can easily change back to "Ultra" if you don't like it.

The "Sea" theme is mostly green. I like changing to "Aiblue", which was one of the first themes Jim developed.

There are lots of other colour themes which Don can get from the Ultra site if he wishes.

regards,

Martin.

Hi Kim,

If you are uploading several pictures at once, try uploading them one at a time. The upload limit applies to the total file size for the upload.

If you are uploading a single picture, your file size is too big in MB. If it's a JPG file you need to open it in a photo editor program and then save it again with a higher compression setting.

Or ask Don to increase the file size limit in the Gallery Admin settings.

This limit is based on the size of the file in MB, not the size of the picture in pixels.

regards,

Martin.

As Martin pointed out, members can change the "THEME" to suit themselves,. With out changing the whole board.

This little "Quick Reply" panel is great.

We are all going to go through teething problems, as we learn our way around the site.

Can you reduce the size of the file before posting it to the GALLERY. Most photo editing programs have this option.

I am not sure but I think that the larger files would increase the storage space requirement.

At this stage I would need to speak with someone that has a better knowledge with regard to this matter.

Don asked me to post a quick guide to inserting pictures in your posts using the integrated Gallery.

The following is quite easy to do, but works only in Internet Explorer and Firefox. If you are using a different browser such as Opera or Chrome you must insert images in the same way as you did on the old forum.

1. When you are typing a message and reach the point where you want to insert an image, press the ENTER key to get a nice clear new line.

2. Click the button above the typing area. It's the last one in the row.

3. A page will appear showing all your Gallery pictures.

4. If the one you want is already there, just click it.

4a. It will immediately appear in your message, resized to not more than 800 x 600 size.

4b. Press the ENTER key again to continue typing below it.

5. If the picture is not already there, click the Upload Photo link at the top right.

6. A page will appear with a button labelled Browse or Choose. Click it.

7. Navigate on your computer to where the picture is saved, and click it.

8. Having selected your picture, click the Upload button.

9. Wait a few moments for it to upload to the Gallery.

10. A page will appear showing all your Gallery pictures, with the new one at the top left. Click it.

11. It will immediately appear in your message, resized to not more than 800 x 600 size.

12. Press the ENTER key again to continue typing below it.

13. When ready, click Post Reply or Preview buttons in the usual way.

Easy-peasy, once you have tried it a few times. :bg:

Note that the picture must be less than 3MB in file size, and not more than 6 Megapixels (e.g. not more than 3000 x 2000 pixels).

If your camera produces pictures larger than that, for example some digital SLRs, you must resize them yourself before uploading, otherwise you will get an error. A good free program for resizing images is Irfanview -- download from: http://www.irfanview.com/

regards,

Martin.

DW-my old place in "the Cliff"-Oak Cliff was near some "projects" and every night, you could sit outside and it sounded like you were in Bosnia or somewhere. 44 mags followed by some Uzi's with a couple of shotguns and AK's thrown in. And that was just in the early evening! Over here by White Rock Lake, it stays rather quiet all the time except for when the B17 and B24's fly over. The Cavanaugh Flight Museum flys most days and if you have an extra 600 bucks, you can ride over Dallas in a Flying Fortress..

Martin has kindly written a how to on using the gallery to post pictures. See above.

I asked for something simple, setting out the basic method. Look what he came up with.

This will be retained so that new members will see it when they join up (well that's the plan ) It will also act as a reminder for our existing members.

Thank you Martin, We do appreciate the time you put into this exercise

Don
