Herb-there is an alternative...run locos with traction tires or put some of that Toad Snot stuff on the drivers. Or maybe use a hoist to help the loco up the stiff grade. I know that one works.

Draw a line 10" long. at the end draw a vertical line .1" (one tenth of an inch--close to 3/32") connect the top of this line to the verticle line where you started. That is 1%.

Warning! 5% does not look like much on paper, but is too much for more than an engine and a car or two--unless you use geared locos--and I know you don't like them.

How can anybody not like geared steamed? Watching a geared engine is like watching a beautiful woman walk. Simply mesmerizing...

Well the climax is OKAY, although I don't care all that much for them. And that T-Boiler shay is yuck, at least to me....

Anybody know of anyway to turn the On30 Bachmann 2-8-0 an inside frame? Would love it if I could do that, plus Trainworld has it for $99. The reason why I can't have Outside framed locos never ran in Canada.

Yes, Garratts did run in Canada...You just don't remember them. (I am using artistic license)
