Sunshine Models sells several excellent sets of decal chalk marks.  

Since I model the 1900-1905 era, when chalk marks were used extensively, I apply 3-6 Sunshine chalk marks to the sides of every car. 

In addition I make some smeared or fading ones using a white water color or pastel pencil.

Has anyone got anything to say about 'chalk marks' on cars ?

Part of weathering & detailing as well I guess.

But a nice touch for picking out different cars for 'operations' also.

Has anyone modelled any 'reporting marks' ?

During the 1930s a gentleman by the name of "J B King Esq!" who's desire was to write his name on every piece he came across during his travels, 

signed cars with his signature.
