It's vacation time, and even if not everyone can hop on the Starlight or the Zephyr to go to San Francisco right now, I might as well post some cable car photos. These were taken in 1987 and 1988, before the system was completely overhauled, and I'm not completely sure what the cars are like now.

Here is a standard Powell St car like the Bachmann product:

Some of the cars have different color schemes:

Here is a Bombay roof car:

The Bachmann models look better with figures installed:

There are also interesting maintenance vehicles on the system:

It looks like a cable grip is being replaced here. It would be interesting to hear if anyone has repowered a Bachmann car for better operation and done anything toward modeling the San Francisco system.

Many years ago we visited SF and rode those old cars..what a great time. At the car barn, they had a turntable and a little Fordson rail tractor to handle the cars to and from the barn. I trust it is still that way today.
The Mt Tamalpais & Muir Woods RR across the bay used an old cable car on their standard gauge tourist operation. They also had "gravity cars" which would take tourists for a nice ride down the mountain, something that wouldn't be legal today.

I have converted the AMS cable car into a Bogie tram. Its useless on my 1:24 hill so will just run around the town centre. Extra weight over the powered bogie did little to improve traction....
