Just thinking of building a tight radius layout basically using 15in code 83 snap track and trimmed down snap switches. Oval with a spur looping and twisting upwards in the middle.

I know with on30 you can go really tight on radius (down to 4in i think i've seen) but i want to still run a bachman climax or shay up the grade. I read the climax goes tighter than the shay I believe.

For ho 15 is tight, but plenty of stuff runs on it. 2-6-0's, 4-4-0, and most 4axle diesels. I've looked for layout ideas and there are not any 15in radius ho layouts out there that i'm seeing.

A small yard (inglehook) at the bottom with a runaround, 1 stall engine house, small mine halfway up the grade and a larger at the top. product would ship out on the base level oval.

This is appealing because its pretty small, not much in material costs, and still big enough to run production equipment.

Ideas? Thoughts?

Something else to consider besides what radii the loco will squeeze around is-- do the couplers have enough sideways travel to go around the curve?

15" radius?? Yes, the locos will "go around" such but do need some "massageing" for them to do so. How do I know this? I have a couple of places with 15" curves and own a 4-4-0. The Shay will holler and derail sometimes, the Climax is about the same. I would stick with Porters or gas mechanicals. And remember what Herb says about couplers.

afbrian 13,

If your building a little Mining town, You should check out the tight little curves on Lane Stewart  On30 Empire layout that I posted awhile back. It's smaller than your door.

Good Luck on this project. !!!

Just because the loco can go around doesn't mean that it can pull anything behind it :dope:

I have a layout in little over a 2x4' area running I believe on the mainline an 8"-10" radius with good results on my 0-4-0 Gas Siderods. No issues to deal with derailments wise other than where my turnouts {Atlas... tisk tisk} have been giving me trouble or I forgot how to solder track :bang:

Dwayne has a point... its not that bad and I did it with PC ties and an NMRA gauge. No 3-points... on about 10" of track :)

At this point I don't have photos as I am about where you are. I am using a 28 x 80 door (though I have space for a 36 x 80 and may go that way).

The layout I am considering is one adapted from a plan (adopted from another plan) in a book about the Bachman E-Z track line of products (chapter 9, page 62).

I plan on running just some real small engines (Porters, etc.) with about 4 turnouts for car movement and using DCC for control. From everything I have been reading, I trying to stay with 18" curves and I am going to use #5 turnouts rather than #4s. This is just a switching yard, no loop.
