Hi all,
Over the weekend my friends sister came across this box adjacent to some abandoned railroad tracks in Jackson NJ.

My friend asked me if I new what it was, and I gave him a rundown of what it could be, because I didn't know myself. I hope that someone might be able to tell me what it is and its purpose.
Thanks.

It was probably either for a telephone, of some part of the electrics for a signal system.
Very common trackside item at one time.

Are there any conduit out the bottom of the box into the concrete? A guess is that it looks be be for electrical.

Herb the one reason that makes me doubt that it was a telephone is that it is open, no shelter for a man to stand in to make a call. waltr, unfortunately I wasn't there to see it myself, all I have is this picture, I don't know if there was conduit in it, but it involving electrical is most likely. I have been able to view the picture up close and the lettering on the top of the door says something like u.c.and b.co. Thanks for the input, and I hope the new info might help.

It could be a base for an old pole mounted signal. Is there a hole in the top of the box? Or maybe it is a hoax to make model railroaders go crazy wondering about what it is!

Put a $5 bill inside and go away for a couple minutes.

Great news I found out what it is, so no more guessing. It's a Union Switch and Signal relay case, used for switches or crossings, or whatever a relay case would do in coordination with a railroad.
