O Scale Traction Module Layout - Radio Control w/ Battery Power etc.

I am thinking about building a module(s) for 2-Rail O Scale Traction.

I have a number of question before I can start.

Track:

One suggestion was Atlas/Roco O scale 2-rail track. I looked on the Walthers web site and on page 3 of the Altas O Scale Track listing found a page of 2 rail track.

They list a bunch of Code 148 track. Is this what I am looking for?

I also did a search on ebay for "Atlas/Roco O scale 2-rail track" and found a few listing for this.

Module Standards:

The Module Standards will be based on the East PennTraction Club - modular layout standards but optimized for running Light Rail Vehicles with Pantographs or Bow Collectors(?).

Except that I want to use Radio Control with Battery for control and power.

One option will be to power the overhead wire or track so I can use one of the Stanton battery charger boards - or - no power to the overhead and charge the battery on a hot section of track or external battery charger.

I want to narrow my information search a bit. If I build my module in standard "O" scale it will be with Atlas code 148 2-rail track.

Modules construction will follow new developments being worked out using lighter materials and different construction methods.

Radio Control:

I want to apply any new hardware and ideas as they relate to running with Radio Control and Battery Power. I want to operate everything that is necessary for a traction layout using Radio Control and Battery Power.

The part of this related to Radio Control is where I would like your ideas.

Bill--

One thing to consider if you intend to have non-powered overhead.

In case of de-wirement of the pole, with live overhead, the car stops.

With battery power the pole is going to keep going, possibly tearing up the overhead.

Not going to make you popular on a club layout!

Hi Herb,

Thanks for taking the time to comment.

If you notice above I mention the use of a Pantograph or Bow Collector. I do not plan to use a pole on any of my model for reasons like you describe and a few others.

No, my idea is to try and use Radio Control with Battery Power to run a Module Traction Layout.

Hi Bill,

The old Atlas/Roco track is getting hard to find, it was first imported by Atlas in the seventies to support their line of O scale trains  (also made by Roco) which was discontinued many years ago. I believe the track sku's were  numbere3d in the 6000's.  Also, the rail wasn't exactly code 148, but as I recall was a slightly different size.

The current Atlas O track is different, but it should work if you can afford it (prices are way up), although the old Atlas/Roco switches were better suited for traction because they were very sharp, maybe a #3 or less.

Thanks for the information.

I found and bought 5 feet of older 2-track Atlas/Roco on ebay for $6.07 along with some other stuff. So when it gets here I will have some track to play with.

I looked on the Walthers site and the new track etc does get expensive.

Bill, what you are wanting to do will certainly work.  I've been using battery R/C in large-scale for almost 2 decades and am totally pleased with it for what I'm doing; that is, a switching layout with a limited number of locomotives.  I have fully independent control of each unit without any power on the tracks, just like my prototype.

But in your case, it seems to me you may be missing a chance at something golden.  The use of R/C to control units powered by wire would be a fully acurate modeling of YOUR prototype's operation.  If I had the chance to run live diesel R/C, I'd surely look into it!
That said, you may find the new battery R/C system being developed for HO/Hon3 by Tam Valley of interest.  Check their website.

We had a smallish Train Show two weeks ago and in walking around looking at used train stuff I found this small O Scale Diesel, $10 and was said to run.

I got back home took off the body shell and connected my transformer direct to the motor wires and it runs.

Then I removed all track contact wiring and the third rail roller.

Next, you guessed it, I installed one of my Stanton Radio Control Receivers and an E-flight 11.1 volt Battery. It runs OK but the motor and wheel gears are not very good and it is a bit noisy. It does have very good speed control using RC.

I have been watching this MTH Railking O Scale Power Truck on ebay and bought it for $10.21 plus shipping. I actually got two of these and the second one cost $14 and change. Both of these Power Trucks run really smooth and are very quite. They were setup for three rail so I removed all contact wire and the third rail rollers. Next another Stanton RC conversion but for only one of the power trucks so far.

I laid out a circle of track and ran the O Scale RC Power Truck. It runs very quite and has really great speed control.

I may build an O Scale 55 foot McKeen Motor Car. This shows an O Scale McKeen Motor Car floor plate pattern with the RC Power Truck and a O Scale freight truck on the rear. It is sitting on a piece of O Scale / On3 Dual Gauge Track. I played with it on my circle of track and a couple of my cats tried to catch it but when I stopped it the cats would not get close enough to be in a picture.
