I must be crazy, after years and years of building steam locos, I am building a...a...DIESEL. Or it might be a gasoline/mechanical, I ain't sure yet. I had some more old Bachmann On30 Davenport mechanisms, one with a motor which ran great. Well, I have been thinking about bringing the Mogollon Railway into the early 1950's and one thing that would really contrast with the Porters and Shays would be an internal combustion locomotive. I didn't want a 4 wheel critter but a larger loco with 2 trucks so I decided to build something different. I don't read RMC (Railroad Model Craftsman) any more, but was shown an article in the mag about using 2 Davenport mechanisms to make a center cab On30 loco, what a neat idea. Here is my "take" on that idea, an end cab double trucker built in 1:35 scale for my 35n2 railroad. I will show what I have done to make this become a reality and not an armchair "someday" project.

Here are the 2 mechanisms, trimmed down to the basic "motor blocks" to use as power trucks. The motorized one is on the right. The brass machine screws are the kingpins to attach them to the frame/floor assembly.

I built a frame from .030 and .080 styrene with cut outs to allow truck swing.

Here, the trucks have been attached with nuts and washers shown above. Here also can be seen the TEAM LOSI r/c car board between the trucks, under the floor of the loco. This will be "hidden" when more work is done to the underbody.

The frame/floor is fitted with the trucks (powered oned on left) and a 7.4 volt 400MAH Li Poly battery (black thing with wires) and an on/off switch. This was tested and ran just as expected, well. With one truck powered, I had worried about traction, but with a few ounces of weight over the powered truck, the loco can push/pull at least 4 loaded ore cars up the 10% grade to the smelter.  Better than I had hoped for.

Here, the superstructure has been fitted. No detailing yet, just the basic shapes. The cab roof reminds me of old Alco S switchers and has the door on the "fireman's" side and a little porch on the rear.

One of the local bikers showed up to check out the new loco and to give a sense of scale for the little girl. As far along as she looks, the loco is probably about 30% done, much more to be added along with a 2 color paint job. More to come on this project but I thought that some might like to see how "uptown Saturday night" the old mining railroad has become.

DW-it had a hood about 1 scale foot taller and I didn't like the looks (I like low hoods). This could be considered a "sport model" or maybe "chopped & lowered". Well, it's only plastic and things can change. Again. There will be "stuff" on the skyline, exhaust, air cleaner, bell...We'll see.

Steam still rules the line, this modern loco is built for the benefit of one of a friend who models modern standard gauge diesels (MoPac) and is more comfortable running IC than having to constantly watch a pokey old Shay as it looks for a place to derail. I have taken DW's suggestion and raised the hood by maybe 6" scale. Not a bunch, but it is noticable and I still have a low hood. Work continues as long as I ain't running ore trains.

Primer, doors on the hood, much more to add...she's already working on the line. I have never bought diesel parts before (horns, etc) but #6 needs some "stuff"...

Don't be too hard on the Beaver...
