Here's an idea for you guys wanting a coal station that ain't like the ones in Colorado, or most anywhere else for that matter.
Courtesy of the Texas Short Line Journal and the Gary Hampton collection, I present the coal loader from the Weatherford, Mineral Wells, & North Western RR in Texas (where else?). The platform is an old WMW&NW flat car up on pilings. The supports for the "A" frame seem to be metal. The crane turns and lifts the metal coal buckets into the loco's tender. This was truly an "armstrong" operation but was aided by the crane. The splotch in the photo is a defect but doesn't seem to hide any details. OK, who will build one of these...I love this thing but all my locos run on oil so it won't be on my workbench, but yours-
