One of the better Large Scale Railroads built recently is the Port Orford Coast Railroad, by Richard Smith.  He was kind enough to publish his build log as he went along.  Another fellow, who goes by the moniker of SteveC over on MyLargeScale did the grunt work of putting most of the build log in a PDF.  Below are links to the PDFs.

There have been some additions to the saga since the PDFs were produced, but you can find them by looking either at LargeScaleCentral or at MyLargeScale.

Represents a lot of work. The space advantage of outdoors is offset by the necessarily more rugged construction-- the end result is very impressive, however.
