I have just got myself one of these gadjets. Its a wireless PWM 8 amp dimmer, specs are in the advert on eBay.... Viz: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Wireless-Remote-LED-Light-Single-Color-RF-Dimmer-Controller-Control-12-24V-8A-/390496461927?pt=AU_Lighting_Fans&hash=item5aeb672467&_uhb=1
you may have to cut and paste to see this.

Ok so what I am contemplating is turfing my secionalised setup and equiping each of my cars with one of these. Pros - each car would be individually controlled, Overhead would be at a constant 12v 15amps, the pcbs are about 45mm sq if taken out of the case, lights would be consantly on and of course speed control and stop start.
Cons - NO reverse unless I can find some way of doing it individually for each car....

Thoughts from the floor chaps?

Looks like you'll only be able to run one car at a time. Doesn't look like it has multiple frequencies. Also what is the transmitting distance, doesn't say.

Not trying to discourage you. For that price might be worth a try.

Bernd

Not that those that control purchasing will notice the difference, especially if some huge expenditure is made at the same time --like a round of beers at the local, for all the crew---but---

The one in the link is $5Aus---

L: If you were to set your motor up with so that it sees zero volts at 1/2 way on the dimmer - less than 1/2 way = reverse direction, greater than 1/2 way = forwards direction. Don't know if its possible, but maybe with some extra diodes, a bridge rectifier and a stepdown resistor or 2??? That might fix your reverse problem.

Next question - Now how good are you at finding 1/2 way every time in order to park your tram?

What I have now done is lash out on one of these, just in the interests of research you understand; http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/350687616075?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

The single channel ones come as "mated unique pairs" which means one key fob one car so I think that solves the problem of them all responding to one controller...
this 3 channel jobbie looks like its a common anode setup, has a range of 100m (far to far away to see what's happening anyway) but if the overhead is constantly live a 3 channel controller lets me have control over speed, lights and sound effects; George at ittp does a "real' gong sound george@ittproducts.com he can put your own sounds on his modules at no extra cost... And as the majority of my trams will be handbrake cars there will be no need for compressor sounds, or the hiss of brake release etc, just a simple "ding Ding" as the tram moves off.

Reverse when I think about it could easily be manual a discrete DPDT switch, or a DPDT semi rotary switch connected to the hand brake perhaps would do the job nicely as I have to swing the trolley pole anyway... back poling as I have discovered around around curves and through frogs is fraught with disaster....

I'm thinking this may be the big GO as atm I have voltage drop caused by the flying leads to the hand held PWM controllers.... No other cost efffective solution seems to pop out at me....

I have installed one of the single channel key fob controlled gadjets on one car.... As I have to swing the trolley pole manually I went with a small 5 amp DPDT switch to swap polarity to provide reverese....

I still can't post pics here but its all written up on my blog. http://trevs-tramway.blogspot.com.au/

Intiial experimental running suggest that this may be the way for me to go; its a cost effective compromise....

Hi Trevor,
Just been and had a trawl through your blog. Nice work with your trams.

If ever you happen to be dowm Wollongong way on the second Sunday of the month, here's 2 full-sized trams that you can pat :bg:
Car 95, an ex-Sydney C class, 9 window variant
http://www.ilrms.com.au/car_95.htm

Car 430, an ex-South Melbourne cable tram trailer
http://www.ilrms.com.au/car_430.htm

Both were standard gauge but are now running on 2' gauge.
However I don't think that your radio control gear will work too well on these :)

There you go! This is just the kind of "box outting" "envelope pushing" work that makes it all worthwhile. Years ago, I used a little $7 r/c toy car board to control an On30 railtruck. The board was very tiny and had reverse but no speed control. I built the railtruck with a Grandt Line 180:1 geared motor and with that setup, the little truck started up rather slowly and stopped the same way...almost like there was a speed control. Sometimes, SOMETIMES, cheap is just fine.
