North of San Francisco there is a half-mile-high mountain rising seemingly from the water.

It is held in affection by all, and so is the memory of the now vanished Mt. Tamalpais & Muir Woods Railway which scaled it.

...

Thousands of thrilled tourists rode the gravity car,
gasped at the breath-taking scenery,
visited nearby Muir Woods,
and recollect the trips fondly to this day.

Here is a readable history of the railway's 30 years of existence - its planning and construction,
branch lines,
methods of operation.

Read about how it pioneered in novel equipment,
watering wheels,
heating feedwater in the stacks,
and being one of the first to use oil burning locomotives exclusively.

(don't ask me? pit-nickers ... I'm readin' the JACKET !)

more to follow !

Si.

Yes, it is a great book by Ted Wurm and Al Graves. Matter of fact, here's a link to available copies from ABE...hold on...they start at a couple of bucks!

http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?sts=t&tn=crookedest+railroad+in+the+world

At those prices, EVERYBODY can afford one! This is a cool book and has a chapter about how to fire a Shay locomotive, from getting the fire going to putting her to bed after a run. Great stuff and there are drawings of the Shays, Heisler, and the incredible tourist cars and "gravity cars". YOU NEED THIS BOOK!

A model railroad based on the MT&MW would be almost impossible to operate protypically.

Prove me wrong!!

You could be right Herb.

How about gravity-cars with RC brakes ?

Looking at the pix. in the book ...
... & there are a lot of pix.
... the scenery could be pretty interesting !

Cheers

Si.
