A portion of a 1925 Sanborn Fire Insurance Map portraying Southern Pacific’s locomotive facilities near the modern day West Oakland BART station. The series of spurs on the bottom left are wood storage piles for various woodworking projects the Espee needed to do, such as rebuilding freight and passenger cars, depots and steam locomotive cab interiors.
The inset shows that they used to have a car shops in the same shape as a locomotive roundhouse. The Bay marshes came right up to the edge of the yard, but that obviously changed around WWII when the military built a large complex of warehouses where the modern Port of Oakland Stands.

The Sanborn maps are awesome tools for historical research, and just plain cool to look at! But, even Sanborn was known to make a mistake or two. This map misidentifies the 32-stall roundhouse at the west end of the facility as the SP's "car shop", which is was not. The car painting and repair shops were located east of the machine shop (with its attached roundhouse). The car painting shop is shown as a pink square with a white rectangle below it marked "car shift" (a transfer table). The car painting shop became, many years later, the diesel shop and may still survive. It's been a long time since I was in Oakland. John Signor's book, "Southern Pacific's Western Division" has wonderful photos, and John's incomparable map work, to illustrate this facility.
