Great old mining equipment there.
Is that an abandoned site, or what?

Hi Ray,
From their website,
"Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center maintains and stewards Jawbone Flats,
a rejuvenated historic mining town in the heart of the 35,000-acre ancient forest watershed,
of the Opal Creek Wilderness and Scenic Recreation Area."
http://www.opalcreek.org/
It's a wilderness education site now,
with a lot of this kind of old equipment and machinery laying around.
The first set of photos showed the mining stuff.
There is a small town called Jawbone Flats which was the mining camp from the 30s.
(Yes, I signed up for Freerails shortly after my visit.)
They mined gold, lead, zinc, copper and silver.
Here's a second set of photos that show some of the remnants of the sawmill.
It's a couple of miles away from the town.
I read that the logging company gave up on the site because the terrain was too steep,
and they had lost some trucks into the canyon (maybe true; impressive canyon).
Somehow this valley escaped serious logging,
and there are many stands of giant old-growth trees remaining.

I loved stumbling across stuff like that,
out in the middle of downtown nowhere,
back when I used to take walks.

If I could find old stuff like that around here,
then I would be out in the woods...stumbling.
Please continue with the photos!
