This past winter, I started a journey into HOn30 madness. I decided that I wanted to build a switching type micro, and found "Littleport" on Carl's Micro website.

I changed it around some, keeping it 12x48, using Peco Settrack turnouts and Atlas Code 80 track. I had it available, and I didn't want to spend too much money. (blew that concept a long time ago)
The idea was Maine-ish, and I drew a little picture to get a feel for what I wanted to do.

I've made some progress.

I still have lots to work on, and I'll post some more pictures later, along with the current state of the Five79 Forney. (sans dead rail gear...more on that later)

I've got a little time this morning to type, so more photos cometh.
It started like this:
Since this photo was taken, I've made some changes, primarily the right hand side needed to be redone, as the Forney wouldn't make the tight turn onto the spur. I then cut back the "coast", and added another section of dock.
The wharf was quickly completed by adding some strip wood to cover the Masonite frame.
Keep in mind, that I'm not building this to any particular prototype. The wharf was just my "this should work" for being strong enough to get knocked around, and to occasionally put bottles of glue and paint on.

The Boxcar is a Railway Recollections Yosemite Shortline car, which I like for it's length on this micro. 18' means I can get a few here and there.

So far, my HOn30 locomotives consist of a Railway Recollections Porter, which is mostly finished.
And if you were watching the RC thread, I had started a Five79 (formerly Chivers Finelines) 2-4-4 Forney. I was able to get the chassis to run dead rail, but because I can't convert my next locomotive or the porter to battery (not without cheater cars), I decided to opt for straight DC for now, and save RC for my On30 stuff.
It started like this:
Now, after initial spraying and some detail painting (not seen here) Number five looks like this:
I'm opting for a fresher look on this model, because even though the RR is on a shoestring budget, Number 5 is loved by her crew, and is taken care of regularly. She'll have some light weathering and road grime, but I wanted to show a look of a less filthy locomotive.
The paint is Semi Gloss black enamel (Model Master) and Gunmetal (MM Metalizer Lacquer). When working with both enamel and lacquer, be sure to put the enamel over the lacquer, not the other way around, or the solvents in the lacquer will attack the enamel.
This is my first try at making a "new" locomotive. Usually, I go straight for Engine or Grimy Black.

Thank you everyone,
It's been a lot of fun to build. After spring, I haven't worked on it until the last few days. I needed some modeling time.
I had originally wanted to use the RDA Johnson's Boat Works kit on this side of the layout towards the front, but I had to move some track around, and it wouldn't fit, so I replaced it with Bar Mills' Staton Marine. This morning, I cut the RDA kit up to salvage along the backdrop, which will have to be touched up to blend with the background flats.

This afternoon I was able to get a little of the south end of the cove's backdrop painted. It still needs a little work, but I need to get some structures built to place so I can focus on the areas that will be seen. It always seems like I'm waiting on one thing to do another, and nothing progresses as 1,2,3.
The tricky part is the road that ends at the backdrop. The freight depot in the plan will help to camo that, along with maybe a strategically placed billboard and some trees. It's a very narrow strip between the road and the spur. I grabbed an RSLaserkit freight depot to squeeze in there, and the "shops" in the plan are going to be Bar Mills' Gravely building, which is started, on the shelf. Between that and the freight depot along the backdrop, I want to add a general store, diner, or gas station. I haven't decided yet. I also need to find a passenger depot, and since it will be front and center, I'll need it to be pretty cool.
Well, that's all for now, the neighbor has been smoking all kinds of meats since 5am, so I'm gonna get in on that action.
