I want to make an Illuminated tram for "Festive Occasions" like the real ones they used to have with flashing lights.

Ok so I already have one of these which come in handy if you want to play around with LEDs to see what they do with differing currents; http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SN9F-Mini-Handy-LED-Tester-Test-Box-2-150mA-for-Light-emitting-Diode-Bulb-Lamp-/121217899962?pt=AU_B_I_Electrical_Test_Equipment&hash=item1c39265dba

I was contemplating flashing the leds (1.8mm red and green) with a simple Jaycar alternating led flasher that uses a 555 timer and am I right in thinking that a 555 can sink 200mA which is i drive the leds at 5mA means they could flash 40 leds? means of course that the resistors (R3, R4) would have to be changed. this is the circuit; http://solderpad.com/psd/railway-crossing-lights/
I don't want anything fancy, remember this is turn of the 1900's technology in reality it would have been a rotating switch which may have been capable of either a simple flash or chase effect... Thoughts? Ideas?

This sort of thing.

The Blackpool (England) illuminated trams don't normally flash but they have some good night time colour schemes.

Chase lights would be great! Have them start at the rear, and go forward. Small rotating drum switch, with an angular drum contact. When the car reverses, reverse the drum motor. Would require small wire contacts (as on a cheap music box) to keep flasher unit size down, and magnet coil wire to keep the large number of led feed wires hidden.

You CAN do it Trev--and the effect would be stunning!

You can get LED chaser kits that are about 25mm sq and will drive 40 leds @ 30mA so if you wanted 80 leds chasing you could drive them at 15mA.... just means a change in the resistor. I think.....
