Joe Works Shay - HOn30 Basket Case - to Sweet Running Engine

I don't even remember when I bought this Joe Works Shay but it must have been a bargain.

It was started, but had been super-glued together, not soldered, and was a bit sloppy.
The rear truck was attached, along with some of the line shafts etc.

A model maker in Japan was recommended to me, to fix and get it running.
I contacted him, and he requested pictures.
I sent them, along with pictures of my HOn30 Heisler.

He replied that he could do both, and gave me a price which included painting,
as long as I wanted black.
He could do a custom paint job, but that would add to the cost.
I wanted black anyway, so the paint color was settled.
As Henry Ford once said :- " You can have any color, as long as it's black "

I thought the cost was very reasonable and shipped him both models.

His first comment after receiving them, was that the he recommended removing all the super-glue,
and starting over on the Joe Works Shay, and soldering the model back together.
I agreed and he went to work.

This is what the Joe Works Shay looked like when I got it:

Fast forward a couple of months, to this morning, when I got both models back from Japan.

Three Shay engines.

Top is the Joe Works 13 Ton HOn30
Center is my N.W.S.L. #122 'Mich.-Cal.' #2 13-Ton HOn3
Bottom is my Keystone Shay HO 18-Ton

The #2 is a N.W.S.L. 'Mich.-Cal.' HOn3 13-Ton Shay.
It is as "new in the box" as any model could be, and it runs like a Swiss Watch.
I have only had it a couple of weeks.
It was built as C/N 122 with an is as built in 1883.

2015 my ... "Year of the Shay" ... is off to a great start !  :)

Kobayashi-San?

He and Katsumi have been very helpful to me with Japanese models.

I bought a reissued Sango 2-6-0 Dachs kit,
and he was able to send me a complete set of instructions in English,
and they both have been helpful getting hard to find Japanese items to me.

It gets better:

Toma is planning on releasing a Shay early this year.
I keep checking his blog to see when.

Hi,

Kobayashi-San?

Yes you guessed it right.

If Toma or someone would bring out a good running, and scaled right, new HOn30 Shay,

I will be buying several.
