I was getting stressed out as to how I was going to keep my insulin cool on the upcoming O/S trip and after looking at what is available I decided to have a crack at making my own thermo electric cooler... The existing Insulin coolers seem to hold 2 pens and are not cheap, I need to hold enough for 6 weeks.
To this end I have secured a 5V, 19watt cooler module, I want to be able to power it from an 8.8Ah USB power bank and hope I can get at least 6 hrs from that. A 75mm sq diecast aluminium box will make the hot side heatsink with a 30mm fan assisting and a conventional finned heatsink will do the cold side. There is also provision in the lid of the box for a thermometer.... The lot to be mounted on an insulated box...... All up around $20 plus my time to make it up.
Not sure if its going to be practical and if anyone is interested let me know I can keep you appraised as to the success or otherwise. I may have to go to Iceblocks in an insulated bag ,but why not push the boundaries and go hi tech when a simple solution is there?

Yes well this is an unqualified and total success - if you have room for the batteries.... It draws too much current to be viable in a truly "backpack" sense. Drops the temp from 22C to -1C (which is too cold) so some sort of miniature thermostat is needed.... Maybe a 12V version may work for long car trips, but you can buy those anyway...
I'll go back to the freezer block in an insulated container, I can get around 6C for 10 hours which I figure is long enough between "fridges" to stop the Lantus going off.

my wife uses the novolog and levemir pens we went to hawaii for a week a couple of times but the pens don't have to be kept in a reefer when you are going to use them so she just took what she need and had no problems
