Not sure of the answer Herb, but my best guess is that it was faster than a normal train. And they tried to compete with the emerging automobile and aircraft by reducing traveltime.

These railcars are direct succesors of the famous Kruckenberg "Schienenzeppelin", the concept of which had advantages ( e. g. negotiate relatively steep grades at speed -not the original one, but the jet-driven- ) and disadvantages ( all outlined in the article )
