This has come up several times over the years and now I ain't gonna keep my mouth shut about it any more. It's the stinkin' RATINGS BS...you know, how many stars some thread gets. We who appreciate the time and talent it takes to build, research, and post information think (well, I think) that there is a mean spirit-"I'll show you" attitude which can sometimes drive off those who take the time to contribute. I will give ONE example (there are many) of this type of petty...well, what can I call it...IDIOCY. How's that? One of the best threads ever posted on this or any other website gets TWO FREAKING STARS! Yep, I just signed on this morning to check things out and have "a cuppa" and found that this particular thread had a low "star count". The gent who has worked for so long and is a recognized authority on his subject (and many others) should have all the stars and more. I know that he won't lower himself to get into this "discussion", but I will. The ratings thing is silly and once you've "voted", you can't vote again!  This particular thread once had the 5 stars and this morning has TWO. There are some out here who seem to delight in "playing" star makers.  Yes, I am considered a moderator and may be considered a deleted ex whatever after this (I have the power to delete things but not the stars) and if that's what happens then I will have some more coffee and go back to work on my projects. I know that I am not alone in this view of a backward and defective thing. I have been known as a troublemaker for years and have been deleted from other "sites" when I opened my big mouth (posted the truth!). I have found that those who really cause problems don't contribute anything anyway. And so, as I once posted somewhere and got shunned..."OK, let's see YOUR work!"

My "rant" is over now...or is it?

Woodie,

I've never clicked a star rating here on a thread once. In fact, I didn't even know you could "vote" for your favorite thread. Why even have that feature here? The relative value of the threads speak for themselves. My advice, don't even waste your time ignoring the stars. ;)

In fact, I just went and looked. Where the heck are these stars? I don't see 'em.

There is a 'rate topic' thing in the upper right of the thread. I am 'not authorized' to rate though.
I wonder if it can be turned off? I don't know why we need it. The forum is small and each member can decide what to read.
Can you tell who rates a thread and how they rate it Woodie?

Howdy Ken, I don't know anything about the rating crap except it sucks! You should be authorized to rate threads. Like I said, I can delete whole topics, etc. but CAN'T do a thing about the stars! I am the type who would give everybody 5 stars but it seems that once "voted", you can't vote again on that thread. Someone who grinds axes can see the 5 stars and rate it one star and that knocks it down to maybe 3 or 2. One jerk can change the rating! Oh, I'm sorry...I shouldn't call people jerks. How about sh$% heads?

Shoot for the stars....

Well my friend, I just tried to give you 5 stars for this topic, however I do not have authorization either. Here's a moose instead: :moose:

Hi star-makers !

:moose:

Yep ... The stars are pretty meaningless.

If a '1-star' thread has a zillion replys & views...
...it pretty much has to be an interesting one !

Having said that...
...there are plenty of threads on Freerails that are short, sharp & sensational...
...hidden away, with NO REPLYS and NO STARS and only a few views.

SO GO FIND 'EM WATSON !

As Woodie says the star-system is a waste of data-bytes !!

OK Here is the story. Right now In am the the head janitor, and cat's litter box cleaner around here--AND I DON"T LIKE THE STARS EITHER. In the past, I contacted the host --Jim, and his wife Di) and asked if it could be removed. Now, other times, when there were other problems, they got right on it and fixed things promptly. FreeRails was one of their first customers, and Jim spent several hours on the phone with the fellow in Australia, who was our  Administrator at that time, taking him through the sign up process, item by item. If that isn't help, I don't know what is, that just seems to be the kind of people that they are.
The whole host thing has exploded on them, because you get a lot for your money there.
My thought is that to change the ratings (or better yet to remove it) would require re-writing some code in our program, and neither of them has the time to do it fo one customer.

As Woodie says, I believe that someone who is insanely jealous some how gets off on doing this sort of thing. The world is full of them

. To you who have contributed to FreeRails, there is no way that I can thank you enough!!

And Woodie isn't going anywhere--unless he wants to!

I couldn't care less for stars, or #s of friends, or how many 'likes' you get online.
None of it means anything.
It's one of many reasons I don't take part in social media. My interactions online are limited to ebay, vendors and forums like this that are specifically devoted to my interests.
I DO, however, like the unofficial ratings of moose on this forum, because that represents what a person thinks of your modeling skills and what you've created. I give moose when I think of it, too. But that's like writing, "I love what you did there," in the same capacity.

I also didn't know you could vote 'Stars' until Ken's Post above; I've never noticed that "Rate Topic" thing in the top RHS corner.

As my fellow Limey says, the Meese/Mooses/Mesi thing is more personal & thus, hopefully, genuine.

What is the plural anyway ?.

If 1 mouse = mouse, and 2+ mouse = mice, then surely Meece ???

OK, the MOOSE works for me. And as an added benefit of being on this site, I have the pleasure of announcing that everyone here has been awarded the coveted MMR designation by the NMRA. Yes, the National Monkey Railroad Assn.'s award...the Monkey Model Railroader. And in the future, I will try to be more tolerant of opinions that aren't mine. (Like hell I will!)
Now, whar's them Meece???

Woodie, I can't speak for everyone (or really anyone besides myself) but I too don't care for the star ratings.  Also, out of the hundreds (or is it thousands?) of members, there's only a couple hundred that are active.  It could very well be that the people using the star rating system never comment or contribute anyways.  In other words, the star rating doesn't matter in the least!  Now that being said, I won't demand getting rid of the stars, because just as herb said, it would be a pain in the butt to remove.  The last thing I'd want to see is people wasting their time to remove something that really doesn't matter anyway.

So perhaps the solution is to just ignore it as long as the star system doesn't create any more problems.

Wow, I JUST joined these forums and this is the first post I read because your first message when you join says 'go read the few things in General'.

I think I will like it here and the persons running the show!

But since I am new I am going to cautiously give one moose!  :bg:

:moose:

I think this forum needs Monkey avatars now, no?

FWIW, I have and do run a few forum softwares and if I can help with admin stuff to ditch the stars I am willing to take a look.  I know you all do not know me from Adam yet, but the offer is open.  Let me know.

Sorry, but is it just me or is it still there? In other words: I still see them.

I already deleted the Freerails cookies, thought maybe somethings were "remembered" by my computer but that didn't help.

Thanks again for your help.

Yes, the ability to rate is gone, but it looks like previously rated threads continue to display the stars/rating. all themes available to users show the same way.

There may be a plugin or theme that hides the rating column, but this software is pretty defunct so there might not be anything except hacking the software to do what is needed.

I found this for myBB, not sure if it will help.  Often these softwares are a clone of each other with some modifications.

They show up on the forum's list of threads(what do you call them?)...like, hit on narrow gauge then look at the list, stars still shine. No, they ain't on the individual threads when you look, just the main listing(?)...aww hell, I don't know what to call these things. Now, ask me about 1/2 chord ore cars or wheelbase of a D&RGW long wheel base truck and I know the answer...in plain English!

OK, cool! I was going to ask where also. I found them and changed the 'simple' theme. Now I'm off to change the Sea theme which is the default for the board.

Well, it seems like I have made way too much of this anyway. My original intent was to wonder why excellent threads get little praise from the stars. I don't care if anything I post gets anything, I just didn't want to see the folks with the good stuff get pissed off and leave because they got "poor" star ratings. And besides, I don't have anything better to do than gripe about something. Maybe I had better get to work and actually build something worthwhile. Maybe give the cats a bath. Or take one myself...

I always wondered abut the star issue, but for the most part just disregarded it. After clicking on it with no response, I wondered why it was there. I see know use for it because I search for subjects that are of interest to me.If all of the members know that it is a rating by a select few, then that is forcing an unwanted bias on all members. let each member have a vote just by the favorites they choose to view. if "their" rating is allowed, it is counter productive to the site. That is my two cents worth from my little soapbox podium at my bench.

Clif, this is NevadaBlue (Ken) logged into the forum as Mister Tester. I use this ID to help me see what a regular user can see.

Can you see any of the rating info, stars in the review list or anything else?

If you look at the bottom of the page of any thread, on the left side, there is a 'Watch Topic' button that will allow you to follow a selection of topics of your choice. Hope that helps.

Now I'm testing how to see 'watched topics'. :D

If you click on the menu at the top of the page, then select 'your account' you can see a list of watched topics and forums.

So far, that is the only way I see to review a list of watched topics.

There IS an option to have the system send you an email when a watched topic is updated. In the preferences section of your profile, you can select to have the system send an email for watched topics, PMs and watched forums.
A watched forum email will include the text from the new post so you can read it in email. The others just say that the watched topic was updated or a PM sent.

Ken,
I see nothing regarding start or ratings either. The watch/unwatch button is present bottom left of thread.

If folks do not realize it, the tabs across the top when viewing a forum/sub-forum are most useful (most popular, etc.). Those tabs are not present when viewing an actual thread.

If you like I can check all of the themes for you.

If I am looking correctly, I don't see the rating info. All in all I should say that it doesn't bother a whole lot because this is the best forum of many out there. I just feel the need to ramble from time to time.

Man, I whacked a wasp nest! I just hate rating anything anyway. Maybe the best indicator of threads is the number of views and posts. Everybody knows that I love to start trouble anyway. Now, for some more mischief.....

I was tempted to post that ealier, but thought better of it. But now Woodie started it!

Thanks Helmut, Clif and Woodie!

Getting rid of the ratings led me into the guts of the forum software and I learned a lot. Hopefully we won't have many of those issues. Now the pages where the stars appeared have more space on them for stuff we want to look at.

I have also asked on the support forum about the 'watch topic' button. I would like some sort of notification on the screen that a watched thread has been updated, but it appears that it won't happen.

Ken,
i see it upside down above?  but it does have a white background.  if you made the background transparent it would probably be fine.  your graphics app probably put a white canvas behind it when you modified it.

Yep, when I saved it, the machine made it a .jpg. I'l have to work on it on my PC and make it a transparent .gif. And, find out why I can't upload a new emoticon.

Yes, that is my cat buddy Jake. He has a new "sister", June Bug (one of her names). Little sis loves to explore the wild areas of the Gila Rim (layout) and gets a squirt of water when I see her!
And yes, we like to have a good laugh. All I need to do for a laugh is look at some of my projects. Maybe instead of stars, etc. we need a new rating, lifted from American Bandstand...

Woodie,
Good looking cat, he looks a bit 'large'? I have a Chaussie F1. In her prime she weighed 18 lbs with no fat.
