Railroads in the Woods by John T. Labbe & Vernon Goe

First found a copy in my local library, then decided I needed my own copy, as everytime I went back to look at it - it was always checked out.

A detailed history of how the narrow gauge logging railroads were designed and built (focusing on the Cascades in Oregon mostly). Packed with fantastic black and white photos of the bridges and trestles, the geared locomotives (Heisler, Shay, Willamette, Baldwin, and Climax), donkeys, floats, rigging and the loggers themselves. 258 pages, published by Oso Publishing in 1995.

It can be found on eBay if you're patient, and Amazon. Surprisingly I found my copy rather inexpensive too. I paid under $25 shipped.

Hi Chriss

I got around to getting a copy of this last year...
...despite being a 'retired' logger; now digging for the mother-lode !

AWESOME logging book !
Simply has to be one of the best there is.
Almost a case of ... if yer want 1, get this one.

Brilliant print quality on my copy...
...which I think is a fairly recent reprint.

We already had this book shown but since it is such a great book, we needed it again. Wonderful photos and great info for those who love sawdust and tall trees.

I need to get a copy of this someday, as it covers logging railroads in the immediate area I live in.
I agree that it's a very good book.

FYI, this is also an excellent book on the subject, and the photos are all in color:
https://www.amazon.com/Logging-Railroads-Pacific-Northwest-Color/dp/1582485151
All the RRs in this book are gone now, as Weyerhaeuser quite running out of Longview now long ago and Simpson out of Shelton (the last logging RR in the US) very recently, so soon that all their equipment is still there at this time...

Hi Ken.

I think the only book I've got of logging pix that comes close to it...
...is a big book of Darius Kinseys photographs.
He was a great photographer !!

I'm envious of you Ken.
I can see my copy under a huge stack of files I DON'T WANT TO LOOK AT !!
But it needs careful extraction !
