My screen is 2048 wide.

Let me ask a few questions. Did you ever see the pages on this forum that had very tiny text and very large images? That page, with the original code looked that way on all of my screens, iPad or PC, no difference. Now, they look fine.
I guess that question is the most important. Am I the only one who ever struggled to read a page on this forum due to image display? I suspect not. I found the 'fix' on the support forum for the board software because others had the same problem.

My screens load almost instantly now, same as before.

I have no problem putting the code back like it was if it is causing problems.

I need input on this one I guess...

Since becoming a Freerails member, I have used the site on the following devices:-

Macintosh G4, Power PC Chip, OSX, 4:3 Screen, Safari Browser.

Macintosh 15", Power PC Chip, OSX, Widescreen, Safari Browser.

Macintosh Mac Book Pro, Intel Chip, MacOS, Widescreen, Safari Browser.

P.C. Laptop, Intel Pentium Chip, Windows XP Pro, 4:3 Screen, Firefox Browser.

Motorola DEXT Cellphone, Android OS, Normal Browser.

Motorola ATRIX Cellphone, Android OS, Normal Browser.

PHEW ! ... I've been on Freerails quite a bit !!

All of the numerous devices, manufacturers, CPU Chips & Browsers, have ALL without a single exception EVER, displayed Freerails flawlessly.
If they hadn't I would notice it in a microsecond & be moaning about it forever.
(I love moaning about the rip-off computer industry & it's constant stream of so called 'improved' products !!)

In fact I actually access Freerails most often using a Motorola cellphone.
Despite having several digital-cameras, all my images are created, edited & sometimes resized using the cellphone as well.
I post them however from either a normal P.C or Mac computer.

Having thought yet again, for the 3rd time, on the issue of the Freerails forum having new 'auto-resizing' of images applied to peoples view of it...
...I could very easily say, why bother ?
If as a user I am THAT satisfied on ALL those devices, over numerous years...
...why try & fix what ain't broke ?

Very very very occasionally, a larger than is 'sensible' image gets posted here & there.
The origin of these images, is almost always, not from Freerails itself, but from an outside photo host.

The fact is, that almost all potential 'oversized' images are blocked from being uploaded to the Freerails-Gallery in the first place; due to the 0.5 Megabyte file size limit.
Rightly so.
A image 'properly resized' by the Member uploading it, is likely as a 800x--- or 1024x--- image to be around 0.15 Megabytes, so it goes into the gallery fine.

One of the great things about Freerails, is the shear simplicity of it's appearance & software.
No stupid animations, pop-ups, advertising-banners etc. etc.
Just GREAT member-content ! ... & no distractions.

All boiled down, Freerails needs to ensure it does THREE simple things, as clearly & easily as possible.
None of which are about software-code, so called 'improvements' or changing the appearance of the site.
All that IMO is fine as it is.

Basically there are 2 types of potential Freerails users.
Those who 'know' about computers & those who 'don't'.

Potentially those who 'don't', might not even be able to become members in the first place, since understanding HOW to become a member, could be totaly baffling.

The 2 other issues that come up time & time again, from new members are:-
How to upload photos to the Gallery & post them.
&
How to resize your photos, before uploading them to the Gallery.
Both of which, are again, potentially baffling issues for some users.

Freerails simply needs a clear, concise, understandable guide or 'Instruction Manual' that any non computer boffin can understand & make work.

There are bits & pieces around on the site already on these 3 issues.
They can no doubt be improved upon & clarified as much as possible; like an excellent 'Instruction-Manual', that 'sometimes' comes with products.

The result can be displayed in clear view, right at the top of the Home-Page.

1. How to become a member.
2. How the Freerails-gallery operates.
3. How to easily resize photos for posting.

If it is possible to understand clearly how to do these 3 things...
...I wouldn't mind betting, that a surge in membership & posting of modeling would 'slowly' happen.

A kinda 'slow surge' ... If you see what I mean !

Si.

'Auto-resize' simply limits image-size & image-quality needlessly.

It should be up to the user to decide how to view Freerails, depending on what screen they have & not have this imposed on them by the site.

I reset the display code so that any image will be displayed as is, no resizing.

Hi Ken.

Perfect.
Just looked at Mysterious Moose Mountain.
It now appears as I would expect it to.
Previously, I had thought my newish computer browser was doing something 'weird' to the pictures.

Thank you, Si

Would you be so helpful as to undertake writing these epics?  The general membership could look this over for a few weeks, and then I would make it a ''Sticky''. Fame and fortune await. A reward of one year's FREE membership could be yours-----

Hi Herb.

I could have a go at it.

It's already a bit of a sticky situation; without you making it even stickier !

As Captain Blackadder said :-

" This situation is about as sticky as when Sticky the stick-insect got stuck to a sticky-bun ! "

" Your Charley Chaplin false moustache looks like a dead slug Baldrick "

" Thats cos it is Sir ! "

Large images? My funky 20MP camera has 2 settings...low res and high res...I shoot the photos I upload in low res, any photos of loose women or ones that I am submitting to some silly model railroad magazine will be in high res. I think some guys shoot without considering the consequences...like some guys do all the time anyway. Is that a square answer?

A concise explanation in one place is definitely the way to go.

There remains one major problem, however.

As the guy who has cut the grass on this playground for far too long, I have noticed one thing--right from the beginning-- and continuing on --it is

No one Reads the first page!

They will ask a question that the answer to is there.

So, someone writes the answer out again. If it's me it probably takes  5-10 minutes of valuable nap time, since I only have two fingers assigned to the job, and have to correct half the words with spell-check---- and NOTHING is worse than Firefox/microsoggy spell check--but thats a totally different bitch------------
