Steve and Reg - thanks for the replies. I will see if the ties bug me or not. I can always add ballast to cover most of them.
Steve - Lighthorseman? Anything to do with Cav? I was assigned to the 2nd ACR on the border with Czechoslovakia during the cold war. I think I had my best times in the Army in that unit.

I think that whatever looks good to you. I think that removing every other tie would improve the appearance. Sure sounds tedious to me.

Let me jump in although this is probably late. I model in 1/35 scale (35n2) and at Si and Woodie's instance I went with Peco 'Crazy Track' (On30 track) rather than trying to remove many of the ties off of Atlas flex track. I did use some Peco HO switches because they had the sharp frog angle that I wanted. I just cut out several of the ties, and after painting all of the track the switches don't look too bad. I still plan on burying most of the ties in dirt and sand.
I use Code 100 which looks just fine in 1/35 scale. I might use a little Code 83 on a few spurs just for varieties sake. You can mix Peco and Atlas track. I once had a HO pike that filled a spare bedroom (even took the door off the closet to make more room) and used Peco switches with Atlas track with no problems at all. If you incorporate some Code 83 with Code 100 put a Code 100 rail joiner on the end of the rail, squeeze it down as much as you can with a pair of pliers, and solder the Code 83 on top.
I do have some Atlas Snap Switches that will probably make it onto the next extension of my railroad. Atlas has been around for a long long time and most modelers have use it at one time or another. I don't lay my own track or switches because I mainly suck at it, it's never worked for me, and life is too short so who needs the aggravation.

Thanks for the input. I have decided to actually do an entirely different scale and gone to G scale - LGB and Bachmann with a variety of cars. I just cannot get the look I want with the smaller scale stuff, plus the G scale equipment is robust enough for my daughter to handle.
For track, I will probably (highly likely) be using Llagas Creek aluminum track and make my own (stub) switches. I do have a bunch of LGB I got cheap to use for working on my rolling stock and electronics inside, gives my daughter a place to play with the trains, and I have track for the Christmas layout. So far I am doing good, I just need time a cooler weather to work on the outdoor layout.

Too hot this week in southern California to do much of anything outside. I'm following in Woodie's footsteps with my 35n2 layout. It's outside, but under a covered patio. Still, I go out there, do a little work, then head back inside where it's cooler.

You know it! 95+ at home in Santee today (work in Poway - a bit cooler normally)! My layout will not be under cover unfortunately, but I do have a large room inside to play with once in a while.
