RETIRING

Eight years ago I sort of backed into the job of ''owning'' FreeRails. Helped, and encouraged by Woodie Greene I stumbled along, completely confused by what I was doing, but hoping for the best. Due to the fact that the participating members are a great, well behaved bunch most problems seemed mild and most got resolved—in spite of my fumbling efforts.

A couple years ago, advancing age, and a number of disabilating but thankfully not fatal health problems, convinced me that I should start looking for someone to take over. Several members tried out, but then decided that the job wasn't for them.

Then came the crash. Having no internet knowledge except what I picked up along the way, via FreeRails. Panic ensued! The fellow that is our server, Jim, was very, very helpful—as he has always been. He was able to get us back in action, but there were plenty of loose ends that needed tidying up-and Jim had spent an inordinate amount of time on our problem already, doing things that his other customers could have probably done for themselves. I was in way over my head, and I knew it.

Si quickly stepped up, and knew what to do. Subsequent discussions showed that he was willing to take over, aided by a couple members who I have the highest confidence in. Will there be changes? I'm certain that there will be—but Si has the same dreams for FreeRails future that I have always had. A place that beginners and experts can feel comfortable in, and display their work.

I don't plan on going anywhere. Perhaps I will be able to get some modeling done, but I will be far in the background, hacking at my fingers with a dull Exacto knife like I did when I first joined. Might even get back to posting some photos of the Octoraro & Eastern, most of which still needs scenery.

Its been great folks. The job could have been much more difficult, were it not for the fact that you have helped with your contributions, and professional behavior. You will still get to put up with my occasional pathetic humor—unless I get banned, that is. And for all the friends that I have made along the way, please stay in touch!

Hi Herb :old dude:

NOT SO FAST DUDE !

You ain't retiring yet Herbacous.
We, us both, have a good few more things to sort out first !

Those flip-flops & beers will have to wait for just a tad longer !!

Herb will OF COURSE still be a Freerails 'Administrator'.
Just doing it, when we're done, from a deck-chair using binoculars & enjoying a cold-one !

A kind of 'long-range' tactical-Admin. !!

;)

Si.

Hi Guys & Herb :old dude:

Well ... I am as surprised to read about Herbs so called 'retirement' as you probably are.

" Si has the same dreams for FreeRails future that I have always had. A place that beginners and experts can feel comfortable in, and display their work."

Indeed I do Herb.

When I joined Freerails, 4 1/2 years ago now, I no doubt joined as you all have, because I thought Freerails was a fantastic place to be.
Without the encouragement & enthusiasm from other 'Freerailers', my modeling would not be what it is today.
I have a long way to go with it as well !!

As for changes.
As far as I'm concerned, there won't be any !
Herb knows that I am a 101% 'if it aint broke, dont try and fix it' kinda guy.

One thing that will happen in due course though, is that with the help of Jim from 'Data 1 Systems'
we would like to update the Freerails Board software, to 'Data 1 Systems' current most recent version.
This may well fix 1 or 2 issues surrounding some functions of Freerails, such as the Members Gallery.
We will see.

Other than that
The 'behind the scenes' day to day work, that keeps Freerails on track
will be slightly restructured, to be less of a burden to any 1 individual, as it has sometimes been for Herb.
There is actually quite a lot of this to do & it is effectively 'unseen' by Freerails Members.
But it is obviously what keeps the Freerails wheels turning !!

I Posted the following, in the Freerails 'Crew' Forum.
Here is a slightly shortened version, which explains things a bit more :-

- - - - - - -

Hi Guys

For a year or more now, Herb has been looking to have more free time, away from the day to day running of The Freerails EXPRESS !
He has made this known to all on the Site & has even considered closing down Freerails if a solution couldn't be found.

I first spoke to Herb about this, over a year ago now.
Various people have had various thoughts about this during the period also.
But no one has actually come forward & proposed anything 'solid' about it.

In fact, having talked to Herb about this, in the last year he has likely spent MORE time sending & answering eMails etc. concerning Freerails, NOT less !
The pinnacle of all this, has of course been the total fiasco of the Freerails server-crash, and subsequent 'mopping up' operations.
Herb brought me in, principally to oversee and correct all the problems & fallout from this disaster.

As a direct result of dealing with all this in the last 2 months, I have only too clearly seen, just how MUCH Herb has to do 'behind the scenes' to ensure The Freerails EXPRESS ! doesn't derail !!

Having been pretty much in daily contact with Herb over this 2 month period, I spoke to him last week & proposed a 'solid' solution to the uncertainty of the last year or more.
Basically I put forward a proposal to ensure the long term financial & technical stability of Freerails, well into the future.
Herb liked what he heard, has seen progress & results due to the last 2 months work, and decided that for the benefit of Freerails Members & his free time, to give it the go ahead.

Over the coming few weeks, I will take on a 'new role' at Freerails, that of General Manager.
The Freerails EXPRESS ! will continue on it's tracks as usual, Whilst the financial & technical stability of the Site will be guaranteed as a long term commitment on my part.

Freerails will continue to be run by the Members, for the Members, as it always has been.
I will oversee this, in the 'new role' of General Manager.

:moose:

Si.

Herb, I'm only an occasional poster here but a daily visitor and I would like to thank you for all you've done to keep the forum on track. Enjoy your deserved extra free time and hopefully we'll see more of your own modelling.

Si, I wish you well with the new responsibilities and I've no doubt you wouldn't have entered into them with closed eyes so good luck for the future and thanks for seeing that FR continues for all our benefit.

It's a pleasure to be able to have access to this mine of information and inspiration and I for one have every confidence in its future.

Herb

As Doug expressed, I fully agree, only been a member for just over a year, but enjoy your input. Relax and enjoy
your retirement.

Retire? What the hell are you retiring for? You're too young for that crap!
I retired a while back, got 4 new Firestones for the Jeep. I guess the Jeep is re-tired also.

Hi Herb,

Good to know that you are getting extra help for the forum and have some more spare time. I like to see more of your modeling also.

Cheers, Alwin

Herb,

I hope you realise that under the FR T&C's ,
short notice retirees (in your case very short notice) must repay their last whole month's pay check immediately. Si needs the money for his MMM budget.

You've done a great job here, now get some of that bloody scenery of yours completed.

Cheers & Many Thanks, Michael
