I was assembling a Christmas train set for my daughter and got out a couple of old 2-4-0 O27 locos to check out. One ran great; the other was a bit sluggish, so I took it apart to clean and lube it. This was what I found. An ancient bit of tinsel was wound around the motor shaft and jammed in the gears. Amazingly, that loco now runs like a scalded dog!
Just say no to tinsel...

Good catch Rick!!!
A guy I used to work with knew I was into trains and he brought in a box of old Lionel engines for me to "fix".
Everyone had dog hair and carpet lint wrapped around the axles so bad none of them would run. I cleaned/lubed them all and the only real thing I found broken was a couple of headlight lamps.
Carpet running will cause such things (but it sure is fun).

The lucky kids were those that got their track assembled on lino instead of carpet. Took a fair bit longer before they stopped. :>)
