Perhaps this has been brought up here before, but the following seems to be an interesting solution to screen viewability and tactile feel for outdoor use of smart phones and bluetooth control.
http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/25866 and scroll down to "FOR STEAM TOO, PLEASE".

Here's the original article, giving the thoughts in more length.  I've been playing with WLAN control for a time, but shelved it because of the unrealistic screen-sliders and the poor viewability outdoors. That 'skin' is a clever idea, as it customizes control with less costs than the actual devices on the market.

That's pretty neat. So the sliders, etc. take the place of using your fingers to operate the "controls" on the smart phone's screen? Yes, I am one of the "unwashed" and have a phone that is just a phone.
The engineer's cap is mandatory!

My daughters laugh at my phone.  It's about 12 yrs old -  no texts, no camera, no bells or whistles.  Just makes 'phone calls.....and I have just seen one advertised (a modern one with the same spec BUT  with a low spec camera!!) It costs about $2 US or £1.99 GBP  +  minimum top up (in Argos for UK readers!).Heck..I might even "upgrade" to it..seeing as batteries for the present one are getting scarce.  Cheapskate...moi?:bg:

The golf course I work at must have the only pay phone still in existence! I didn't even realize it was there until a few months ago (I've been there for 6 years!!!) and nobody else seems to have either.

I've been looking at 2 wireless game controllers that can be used with the BlueRail/bluetooth board, but they're running $50 apiece. I expect anything made specifically for train control would be even higher, but those sliders would certainly give the feel we're looking for.

Very good, a modern version of those control stands made to operate the knobs and switches of (say) a TAT4 controller.

I purchased a Mad Catz Micro CRTLi Controller, for use with my BlueRail board via my Ipad.

It works fine, but there's some things that I can control from the Ipad that, so far, I haven't been able to control from the Mad Catz Controller. I have an email in to Dave Rees of BlueRail so I'm waiting to see what he says.

I do like the feel of using the buttons on the controller over the slider on the Ipad, but I caught myself still looking at the Ipad while the train was running (no screen on the controller).

Didn't really need it, but I wanted to see how well it worked.

Here we go:

The X button controls the horn/whistle
The Y button controls the headlight
The B button controls the bell
The A button controls the direction
The right stick or the D-pad can control the speed
