Does anyone have an Oriental Models diesel (SW1, SW7, GP20 and others )with a noisy drive line?  The problem is the vertical transfer case gears.  If anyone has any interest, I can show you a way to fix it and lower the gear ratio to get a real nice slow runner. Peter

I'm surprised no one replied to this.  Perhaps you think I'm trying to sell something which I'm not.

Hey Peter,good job!!!

So, all you did was install some rubber tubing instead of replacing the gears with sprockets/chain?

@Bob

Don't know where you got that from............I replaced the top gear with a 9 tooth sprocket and the lower gear with an 18 tooth sprocket.  I left out the middle gear and shaft.

See pics attached.............

Good work there Peter. I am never likely to own such a mech but nice to see something that might help others.
Those miniature gears and chains are very useful when building my mechs.

Hi Cor an all
Check out Serv-O-Link chains http://servolink.com/sprocks.htm and their technical data page at http://servolink.com/sprcspec.htm

According to the spec sheet the chain is good for up to 4lb tension with 2% extension. For your model trains, your wheels should slip long before you can put 4lb of tension on the chain. So chain loading levels should not be a problem.

They also do gears http://servolink.com/gearspec.htm

I have used their chain and sprockets for an operational elevating chain conveyor. The quality is first class for this stuff.
I hope that this helps

Guys.

I get my gears and chain from Stock Drive Products-Sterling Instrument.

http://shop.sdp-si.com/catalog/product/?id=A_6M_7-121604

Here are the part numbers:
1 2.00 2.0 A 6M 7-121604 EA PLSTK.SPR.1227P (US) $1.40 $2.80
2 2.00 2.0 A 6M 7-120804 EA PLSTK.SPR.1227P (US) $1.14 $2.28

I was wrong before, I used 8 on top and 16 on bottom as 16 was the largest that would fit in the opening.

They arrived the day after I ordered them.  Shipping seems fixed, so the more you order the cheaper per gear.

Peter,

Must have been one of those "You said, but I heard" moments.

You know, when your wife says "Go to the store and get some.....dear" and you heard "Go to the store and get some.....beer"!!!
