Because of non-railroad abuse of the site, new members MUST use their first names (at least) to join NO EXCEPTIONS!

This could be "off topic" or something else

There seems to be some members out there who believe that Freerails should have "scale specific" forums. In that "perfect world" it would be the thing to do. I can imagine only reading a 1:35n2 forum to the exclusion of any others. There would be me, Si, and a couple of others posting. What fun we would have! But there isn't enough room for all the modeling scales displayed here so many are "ganged" together. I enjoy things that way. You get to learn what others are doing and maybe get an idea about how to approach a modeling problem from someone in another scale. The discussion is open to new ideas, where's your opinion?

Woodie

FWIW, KISS! Variety is the spice of life and there are plenty of different scale forums already. Using the "RECENT" tab enables one to select and read a topic or not as the mood dictates and "SEARCH" also covers all topics so it wouldn't necessarily help to separate them out further.

Maybe it would be worth requesting (or insisting!) that the scale is added to each topic heading when first posted. Then if it's a less than common area, it would be more easily identifiable and "SEARCH" would presumably pick it up. Just my tuppence worth.

Why fix something that is not broken?. Just read (or ignore) the topics/threads of interest. Can't be any simpler.
Jose.

Seems to me Woodie that this forum is already decent.  But if there were to be a restructuring, I would actually push for FEWER categories, not more.

We've got 31 categories, but 16 of those have less than 100 topics.  That amounts to less than 5 pages of topics to scroll through in those sections, hardly worth complaining about.

If it were my decision, the topics would look like this:

Admin-Getting Started-Important Information
General--Off Topic
Layout Construction and Planning
Model Building and Design
Scenery
Narrow Gauge
On30 (since it's so big on it's own)
Standard Gauge
Electrical-Control-Sound
Prototype Information
Media (expanding on the Books section)
Way Back When

I think that covers every topic and reduces the redundancies.

Those few individuals who want their own little niche have a host of other forums that are dedicated to their specific area all across the Internet.  There's an N scale forum, a Z scale forum, many HO scale forums, S scale, O scale, and Large Scale are all represented that have far more traffic than Freerails.  We're a small community and we don't need to separate things so much when we've got only a couple hundred active members.  Heck, we've got just over 1000 registered members, many of whom haven't logged into their accounts for years.

Now then, I like the forum as it is, so I'm not going to push for changes, just pointing out that merging similar sections would be better than separating everything into their little corners for those 2-3 people to enjoy. I like pretty much everyone here, so I'm not bashing anyone, it's just that we don't have enough people to justify separating everything out.  Now then, if we had a thousand members a day check in (most ever was 492 back in 2011) I could see scale separations because the sections would be very busy and stuff would get buried quick.  But I can find my oldest threads only 2-3 pages back, and that's after 4 years!

So no to complications, ya to simplifications.

Thanks for bringing up the topic Woodie.

Direct them here and inquire what day their cashier's check to cover the required server bandwidth is arriving.

Well ... With over 5,500,000 Page-Views last year ...

... there are a hell of a lot of folk out there looking at the good ship Freerails.

WAY WAY MORE than those who are registered Members.

Not forgetting of course, that you only have to 'login' to Post, not to read.

As a popular British tabloid said ...

... 3,000,000 readers can't be wrong !

What they didn't say, was that their 'readers' mostly just look at the pictures ! ;)

:bg:

Si.

Personally I'd go with Freerails highly experienced crapologist, researcher & philosopher in residence ...

... Jose. :brill:
