Looking good Michael.
What you are doing is not that easy.
You have matched the colours well, and the angles to me look OK.
I glued some road material onto the painted road, which helped with the effect.
I have tried the same thing in the past, and it's trial and error.
Looking forward to seeing the end result.
.......Peter.

Peter,
Thanks for the idea.
I'll try gluing some road dirt on the backdrop and see how it looks.
The backdrop I'm using now is just a scrap piece of wood to practice on.

Peter,
Gave your idea a try.
I like it much better than just paint.
Once I get the real backdrop installed, I think that I can blend everything in,
so that you don't see where the edge of the layout meets the backdrop.

Hi Michael
Looking great.
It has made a difference.
As a suggestion try smaller stone on the backdrop,
that will give the effect of the road being further away.
And try brushing loose stone to the base of the backdrop,
to eliminate the edge at the backdrop.
Your layout is coming along very well.
........Peter.

As I work on the backdrop I figured I would take an overall photo of one section with backdrops already installed.
Left to right: Manly Siding/salt flats, Whiskey Flats, Buckensnortt Creek.

I was thinking a similar thing.
Does it ever rain there?
Great looking scenery.

Well, average annual precipitation is two inches.
Distant mountain ranges will get a little snow.
This was taken in October 2020 from the West Side Road in Death Valley looking east toward Badwater.
Even after a hot summer, and being below sea level, there's still some green out there.
Won't find anything green at the Devil's Golf Course.

As a follow up Michael.
Here is the road crossing on my layout,
with stone glued to the backdrop.

That backdrop looks great!
As soon as I make some more progress,
I'll post some photos.
