I have been searching for a fairly decent copy of the Michael Koch's book "The Shay Locomotive: Titan of timber" there is supposed to be a new book coming that fixes and updates the list of all the Shay locomotives built, and has a lot of added material.
http://www.shaylocomotives.com/photo-call.htm
I've dropped them an e-mail but haven't heard a reply back yet...
Anyone here at FR know anything beyond the 2015 July update that hopes to be printing by early 2016? I'd love to get a copy of this when it comes out.
Photo Gallery and 800+ pages! Now that's going to be a reference book. :2t: Almost double the pages contained in Koch's book.

Howdy Chriss, nope I haven't heard about a new Shay book...for sure it will be popular! A few years ago, the Koch book was selling for upwards to $500 and more...a bit too pricey for me. Let us know when you hear any news.

I've seen Michael's book sell for as little as $125 but never any lower. Even at that price it seems a bit high with so many errors contained in it. I really would like the new book as I'm just interested in historical facts anyways. The photographs would be a bonus.

Out of print books go up and down in value often.
For example, The Milwaukee Road book by Frederick W. Hyde was going locally for as much as $200 bucks a copy for a few years. Then, it is assumed, the people who bought the original run started dying off or getting tired of them, and the value has been sinking ever since. I got one off Amazon for I think about $30.
I've also been seeing a lot of Morning Sun publications books at shows for around $20 each (they usually retail for around 50-70 clams per copy when new). I think the original owners of those are also croaking off, 'flooding' the market for what people are willing to pay and pushing prices way down.
A local guy was TICKED when I told him what I'd paid for my Milwaukee Road book I mentioned. He'd spent over $150 for his a couple of years before that.

Yes the deals are out there, that is if you are willing to wait and have good regular search techniques. I use eBay, Amazon, Alibris, Abebooks, and quite a few individual sellers websites.

I'm more interested in the new Shay Locomotive book coming soon (from what I gather, It is a total re-write of "Titans of the Timber") the new book looks to be a monster if it ever get's published. I'm guessing it will retail for close to, or over a hundred dollars.

Finally located on eBay a deal on the Michael Koch Shay Locomotive book "Titans of Timber" at a reasonable price ($150) and ordered it, should have it here in a week or so.

Still have not heard anything more on the new book coming.

Chriss, you did get a deal, a late friend paid $300 for a copy several years back. Here's where the "deal" goes "south"-I offered to buy that book & some others from the fellow's daughter and was told that she had already sold all his books to somebody for $50 bucks! Some damn "collector" got a real deal and probably didn't lose any sleep either. Don't ya just love guys like that?

Woodie I found it on eBay, the auction started at $65.00 I think, I put in a bid of $199 at the last few seconds of the end, and ended up winning for a lot less, thankfully, says it's in excellent condition except the dust cover has a few folds, scuffs and a tiny tear, looked great in the photos so I took a chance, seller has 100% positive feedback and a lot too, so I'm pretty confident it will be fine, should be here this weekend I hope. THey knew it was worth a bunch as the auction stated "due to the high value of this book it will be sent with full insurance"
Can't wait.

Yeah, someone gets a deal from someone wanting to sell stuff and paid what they asked for it. What a jerk!
How DARE people like that pay what is asked and not offer to pay many times more than the asking price. What unmitigated gall!

OK, blast the seller...someone who "knows" the score would have told her that she was being taken...but there are many takers in this hobby. That's what I just love about it! BTW, I would have paid $200 or more for the Shay book alone but I guess that I am too old to think rationally.
