I have been interested in trains tao some degree for years although I never had a layout. I was inspired to start a layout by Andy Sperandeo's Washita & Santa Fe series in the Jan 1982 issue of Model Railroader. Got some bench work up and came to grief when trying to solder feeder wires to flex track. I did more research and still ended up with a piece of flex track having tie melted away at the ends. As I did have other interests I stayed with those for many years, although I did end up with 26 years of Model Railroader before I let my subscription die.
So here I am living in Connecticut and starting to get interested again. I was interested in HO but operating experience when operating 2 local HO layouts convinced me that something larger was needed. I migrated to S scale. "S scale, what was he thinking?" You may ask. Me too. I like the size, I can see it. But the market is limited in the selection of engines, railroad cars and other items. Then at last year's Narrow Gauge Convention in Augusta, ME I came home with a D&RGW 2-8-0 steamer, wired for DC.
So now my locomotive "fleet" consisted of 1 Athern GP-7 in Santa Fe "tiger stripes", 1 American Models S scale Alco switcher and 1 2-8-0 steamer. All three wired for DC. At best I will have a small switching layout, nothing big enough to justify the expense and hassle of DCC. My operating experience with DC was not especially encouraging. 
So my current plan is to convert all 3, or al leads the 2 diesels to battery powered, radio controlled units. This is getting too long. Even I am not interested in it. Signing off.

Howdy Ed and welcome to Freerails. You will find plenty of info about radio control here, sit back, relax, grab a cuppa coffee, and get lost in the forum. You mentioned Athearn GP7's, my ops buddy has a pair of them powered with r/c. There is a powered unit mu'ed(permanent drawbar) to a dummy which has the ESC/receiver and a 2000MAH 11.1 volt Li Poly battery. He operates a large HO MoPac layout with DC and uses the r/c units to switch his branch line and wherever else needed. Jim gets about 4 to 6 hours per charge,long enough for anybody's ops session! Tractive effort with a dummy full of "stuff" ? About 10-12 cars on a 2% grade...that's pretty good. With S scale, you should be able to "fix" all the locos. Good luck and ask questions if you have them, someone here knows the answers (or claims to know!).
