Here is a short video of some early Atlas Alco RS units. Got them when Atlas first introduced them. Prior to them, I was remotoring and reworking Athearn locomotives to get them to run Smoothly. I am going back many years here.

The video was taken at the Livingston Model Railroad Club located in the basement of the old Northern Pacific depot in Livingston, MT. The layout is controlled by a Digitrax system, but these locomotives are still in their original DC configuration. I am estimating the grade at close to 3%.

2 locomotives could pull this train up the grade but after adding the clubs track cleaning car which weighs a ton, a third locomotive was added.

I recently purchased an Atlas Alco RS-1 mainly to run at the club as my home layout is still DC. The DCC version was a bit of a disappointment because all it could pull up this grade was 8 cars.

Actually that 8 cars on 3% is not unreasonable. Somewhere over on the book shelf is a Morning Sun photo book on the Milwaukee's electrified section where in one photo caption it has where NP on a parallel track had a 4% graze and a z-something class mallet was rated only 600 tons on that grade. That's six loaded modern 100 ton grain hoppers. Six.

And, yes, I know that steam and diesels/straight electrics, with their traction motors, have different tractive effort equations on grades.

And I recall through the decades several sources stating that model locomotives generally pull less on the flat and more on grades than the real deal does. Even so, to me the 8 cars on 3% is not unreasonable.

What my complaint is the difference between the capabilities of the DC versions compared to the DCC locomotive. On my home layout, which is DC only, my old Atlas locomotives can pull a 14 to 15 car train up the two and a half percent grade that I have and the DCC unit again can only handle eight.

Has the DCC unit had frame mass and weight removed to make room for electronics?

Is there current limiting in the DCC which prevents what might have amounted to short time current overload in the basic DC unit motors?

I have not taken the shell off to look at the chassis. I will admit that I am a complete DCC dummy but I have heard that for some reason, the Atlas units made in China for some reason don't pull as well as earlier versions. My home layout is DC only and I have no plans at all to convert to DCC as the layout was built mainly for switching and being a lone operator the only time I ever run more than one locomotive is for a helper for longer trains on a grade.

Guess I'll just run shorter trains with it.
