From Deep in the Heart of Texas
I have had three actual working railroads and around a dozen false starts. My first two were 4x8 loops on benchwork built by my father, the first in O-27 and the second in HO. Over the years since then, I’ve started several, occasionally getting as far as installing some benchwork. I finally got another one built some years back, G scale, a dog bone loop with a small switching and storage yard in a 5 x 25 yard strip alongside the house we lived in at the time. The track was all LGB sectional, the roadbed was cement, mixed and poured on site. Power was from on-board batteries with radio control, though I used a low-voltage outdoor light transformer to power LEDs so the small town around the switching yard was illuminated at night. Motive power was an LGB bumblebee mogul and a Bachman Shay. All of that got left behind when I retired from that company, sold the house, and moved to a small town.
We finally decided it was time to add some outbuildings to our small holding here, and something close to 60 years after my father built that first O-27 railroad for me, I’ll have space for an indoor railroad again. Depending on exactly what space I can steal, it will be either On30 (my first choice, my eyes aren’t as good as they have been) or HO. It will be more fanciful than prototypical, based somewhere in the 30s, 40s, or 50s, or maybe fluidly in all of those.
We haven't even poured the slab for the building from which I will steal space for the railroad, so it's going to be a while.

Take as much as you dare. It is a lot easier to scale back than begging for more.

Howdy Morris, welcome to Freerails. "Deep in the heart of Texas"...if I may ask, where? I am in Dallas now and soon to move East to probably Royse City or Caddo Mills. Yep, layouts come & go, I will be moving my latest one to a new home and changing it around somewhat. If you are close to my area, send me a PM and come by some time.
