Michael:

If a hobby shop were close, I might make some more impulse purchases.

On the other hand, right now I need a small quantity of piano wire.  In decades past I could go the local hobby shop and buy a couple of short pieces.

But I sure don't want to pay $12 shipping on $1.50 worth of wire.

Maybe if you bought $24 worth of wire it wouldn't look so bad.:).....Peter

Big items will always have high shipping.  What I've always done (and, of course, I'm usually having stuff shipped from one state in the US to another) is to make a big purchase all at once rather than making several smaller purchases.  Saves a bunch in shipping!

From one country to another, I don't know if it still applies.

Earlier this year there was a time when price for a nice big hardcover airplane book was same nearly $60 USD at Amazon and direct from the publisher. Shipping from publisher was over $20, from Amazon, free. Even if Amazon had wanted money that $20+ still would have been the deciding factor.

Sometimes shipping cost is a non-issue because there is only one source - for instance, out of this month's Social Security disability I ordered a Hartland Locomotive Works Mack and Sparky drive brick, and a pantograph, from Phil there for a couple kitbashing and scratchbuilding projects.
About the only place to get new parts from HLW is HLW.
HLW are good people and I like to support them.

Another time I ordered from I now forget which one of Tower Hobbies, Amazon, Squadron, because the one had the lowest shipping.

As I live in a little county seat farm burg where hobby shops are over an hour or more away and my health is a mess, mail order is the only way.
While I am thankful for the Post Office, UPS, and FedEx, and the way they come to me it would be fun to go down to the depot to meet the baggagemaster as in days of olde.
(except in sleet and ice, would not be fun then)

I have a machine shop project brewing that will require some stock.  I am hoping my usual source of metal (Online Metals, Inc.) has piano wire.

Hi Reg,

I don´t know what size of piano wire you need, but if it is a smaller diameter, just ask some guys who play an electric guitar.

They put on new strings once in a while and the old ones are still good for our purposes.

I play the bass.  My Fender, which I don't play much since I got my Michael Tobias 5-string, needs new strings.

I bet the cores from the bass strings just might fit the bill.

While we're talking shipping I'll toss in this little tangent,
"On Monday, Fox 13 spoke with a man who verified he’s a USPS carrier in California, and he said it is very commonplace to falsify package deliveries. “We have a very big contract with Amazon dollars-wise, and we are trying to prove to them that we can deliver… 99.8 percent delivery every day,” he said. “So, they try and hit that target.” He indicated that ‘hitting that target,’ leads to manager bonuses. “It’s about management chasing their numbers,” he said. “The reason they chase their numbers, is again, to get their bonuses.”"

Postal workers in Utah, across nation cite delivery problems

Why am I not surprised.

Amazon should just buy the Post Office.  Then we could get our mail delivered by drone!

Or, maybe we could go back to the days of RPOs!
