I just noticed a section in the Deltang Rx features section about IR LED's, especially IR4 which is used for outputting battery voltage to IR receiver. As some friends are insisting that knowing the battery voltage would be essential and 2 way comms would be needed I wonder if this IR4 would do this? I have some locos that have  2 to 4 hours capacity in the battery and it would be nice to know when the battery is near depletion without the loco stopping etc.
As anyone tried this?

It's a feature of the v611 (IR4) and a simple telemetry to indicate the battery voltage of every model so equipped when passing over a proper IR Sensor. You need a ┬ÁC to make sense of that info. You can combine voltage indication and loco address to be sent, so you can tell the status of each. I haven't found any info about the format used - DavidT should enlighten us there.

I think I provided the format to one person who asked but I'm not aware of it being put to use yet. I thought I would make a display but never got round to it. regards, David.

To use a visual LED you would have to stop the loco and count the flashes, plus it would be flashing constantly? I wondered how the flash sequence could be short enough to read on a loco travelling at speed past a sensor. Pity.

Dave, The visual led flashes the sequence when you trigger it manually with a button on the Tx. I doubt if you need to know voltage very often. Yes, you are likely to need to stop the train to concentrate on counting flashes. Advantage is only programming is required if you already have an led controlled by the Rx.

IR4 sends the battery voltage out every 11ms. Two consecutive values are needed. You need to get both, preferably in the correct order. So ideally it needs to see say 35ms of IR led activity as the tran passes.

Thanks David. Another question. Does the visual flash sequence output the voltage as measured by the L pad if used with a voltage regulator?

That's good, can you please confirm the program number sequence to switch it on using the bind button to operate


I have a number of diesels with 4 x NiMh battery packs which give endurances between 2.5 and 4 hours or up to 12 operating sessions and I will not need to have any book keeping, just check the voltage at the end of each session and recharge when it approaches say 4.2V which apparently is the manufacturers recommendation of 1.05V per cell for 4 cells in series.

I just tried it with prog 4 on 2 locos with different Rx's, latest software version.


I used both 7,9,2,5 and 7,9,2,5,0 Neither worked, the Rx just kept triple flashing with none of the expected rapid flashing. With other Prog4 text files the rapid flashing worked.

Dave, I don't believe the v611 programming tables offer you either code sequence you have chosen. An example is provided thus:

7,9,3,5,1 enabled on P1 triggered with Ch5

David, what code sequence do I need to enable on the Rx LED?

edit - Ah! the code sequence table says 3 is enable on P pad ALSO, I missed that. so 7,9,2,5,1 will display the flash sequence on the RX LED? I will try it.

edit - That worked, almost. I get a sequence of 9 flashes and I guess that represents the 9V output of the Pololu voltage regulator

edit - I tried it without a Pololu and it gave the expected 5 + 1 flashes from 4x NiMh in series
