Hi All,

After reading Keith Pashina's excellent threads on the Gilpin Tramway, I thought that I would take a stab at designing a layout for it.

I will warn you that I did take a lot of liberties with the design (most noticeable the overuse of tunnels),
but I think over all, it has some recognizable features.

The design is in O-scale so the mills needed in Black Hawk are big, so I had to reduce most of them to 75% of the original size.

You will also see that I didn't name all the gold mines, and instead just went with generic models.
(Of course, Keith's thread gives enough information to make more accurate models.)

You will also see that I decided to just name the various gulches that the line crossed.

Also not that I didn't like the way my design software handles dual gauge tracks, so I just went with all the same trackwork.
The 3-foot track for the C&S starts at the Hidden Treasure Mill.

Nice, but I always shy away from large portions of the track hidden, but that's just me.
How narrow is the aisle to the far right? Looks like some of the beefier model train guys might have issues squeezing into there...

Yeah, I try to stay away form hidden track as well, but it replaces a helix in this case.

The aisle to the right has a choke point of 30"
The rest is at least 34"

Howdy Robert, a great plan! If I may add this...the Gilpin's minimum radius was 50' and 65' (of course there were other curves) but you might see what you could "get away with" by using 12.5" (50') and 15.75" (65') minimum radius. I don't know if a "stock"On2 brass Shay would curve that little but with some "fixin' and fiddlin', one could surely make it! The 22" is very, very generous for the railway but the C&S 3 footer might need 36" or so if using "stock" brass On3 locos. I hope you get going on this, I will be watching as well as many more.

Thanks for the reply.

I just design layouts for fun, so please don't expect a layout any time soon.

I do realize that I could have went sharper with the  radius, but there was plenty of room for the 22" in my mind.

I also don't see the C&S being operational, that's why there was no staging for it.
It is pretty much set to scenery status since I was concentrating on the G.T.

Robert,

Great plan as usual!
Wow, that would be a lot of operation!

A few suggestions/comments: you could use steeper grades and switchbacks to eliminate some tunnels.
The Gilpiin sure used switchbacks.

The Overland brass shays would handle 7% if you wanted to go that steep,
unlike the On30 Bachmanns (which someone out there HAS modified to On2).
My suggestion would be 4-6%.
Not sure about going sharper than 22-inches on curves, I wouldn't,
those Grandt-Line cars (light!) with Coronado trucks will likely need it.

I would think you could eliminate the large number of wyes but could be wrong.
I would imagine the locos were always operated with the firebox pointed downhill.

Still, its a killer plan.
Might have to add a garage to the house!

The Wiseman reissue of the interior details, from back in the day, looks real nice.

Hi Brian,

Nice to find you on here.

The design was pretty much just a "down-and-dirty" layout based loosely on the Gilpin Tramway.
I just took to many liberties to consider it a good representation of the line.
I think I would have to spend months reading all Keith's posts before I really could do justice to the line.
As it was, I found Keith's threads, and was designing a layout 2 days later.
I never even heard of the line before then.

I'm having trouble seeing your Gilpin module.
What did I miss?

Rob,

I've been following Keith's postings for a while.
Great stuff and very helpful in interpreting the Gilpin Tram.

I haven't posted much on my Gilpin Module.
I am proto freelancing, so to speak, and call my module the Arroyo Tram.

So, I don't think you've missed anything.
Its a small switching layout, 24 inches by 96 inches.
Slowly, and I mean slowly, I've been making progress.
Too many distractions.....
