Finally getting a locomotive improvement project going; adding tender pickup to Bachmann 0-6-0 locomotives.

Bachmann's HO scale USRA pattern 0-6-0 switchers are reasonably decent products for the price but they'll do though they could really, really, use a working front coupler and electrical pickup from the tender - only the 6 loco drivers pick up electricity.

(they could stand to be of rather more consistent quality as 40% of my Bachmann HO and On30 steam and diesel locomotives have had defects or failures, including DCC board catching fire in a GP40; the G trains from them are doing fine though)

Kadee within the recent past released these caboose trucks with pickup contacts and wires. Those trucks are close enough to trucks used under these little bitty tenders.
I bought one and it sat in the box until this afternoon.
I will be buying more as budgeting allows.

Simple to install and as well as giving electrical pickup it turns out the Kadee trucks lower the ride height of tender which was designed in 1980s and sits high enough to clear train set truck-mounted couplers.
Stiffness of wire from truck was a question I had and it turns out to be about as stiff as cooked spaghetti.
All that remains is to work out lead wire attachment to locomotive frame/motor.

And with defective products having been mentioned, yesterday this order of a Model Power Plymouth DDT arrived; gotta say that's one factory failure I'd never have imagined.

or

Really Torn Rightorf !

Hi Forrest

Nice lookin' locies those U.P. 0-6-0s you have there ! :thumb:

Tender pickup is a 'must have' step forward.

I guess it's down to 'price' that it doesn't come as standard.

But from what you & others say ... Broken-gears DO come as standard ! :f:

Am messing about trying to get tender pickup on an On30 Porter right now.

Should be an improvement. :P

As for the Model Power Plymouth.

I've got one !!

Freaked out:w:1:35 scale engineers are peering behind the axle-boxes, as we speak ! L:

:)

Thanks y'all. One of the UP is now stripped to be painted for SP with the light olive-grey color boiler and cylinder jacketing. Am intending to add some free-standing detail to it.
Have several other Bachmann 0-6-0 and they will be getting same trucks.
Seaboard Air Line. It seems to have a driver out of quarter; I need to buy the tool to check that.
Pennsylvania. It has DCC.
One of my freelance roads.
The other freelance road.

An HO steam switcher I miss is IHC's 0-8-0, those were quite nice: basic, sturdy, reliable. Would like to have another couple of them to paint for Seaboard Air Line and Atlantic Coast Line.

Have several of the Plymouths which have ended up as done or somewhat done On30 and Gn15 creations.
