I love DCC, but I am an old guy still getting used to all this new fangled stuff.

I am running a Digitrax DB150 Command Station and DT402 throttle.  I am programming through the throttle.

I just plugged a Digitrax DH126P into a DCC-ready Kato GP-35.  With the factory default settings I encountered no problems.

However, when I went to change the decoder address, I ran into some problems.   I want to use four digit addressing.  On my current layout I am running diesels, Great Northern and Burlington Northern, all of which have four digit road numbers. So the four digit addressing is the most convenient.

When I changed the address on this decoder to 3040, the only thing that worked was the front head light.  I couldn't reverse and the locomotive would not run.  So I went in and programmed CV08 to 008, restoring factory defaults.

After remembering to turn track power back on and requesting address 03, everything worked fine.

Went through the same routine a second time with the same result.

So, I programmed the address 40.   The locomotive ran fine.  In fact, better than fine.  Keep in mind I had changed nothing but the address.  But the locomotive started at a much lower speed than with the defaults and had a longer throttle response.  I liked that very much.  It appears that the programming automatically set up a throttle response curve.

But neither headlight works.  I programmed CV61 to 00.  Still no lights.

What am I missing?

My objective is to use four digit addressing and have auto reversing headlights.

Currently I have two digit addressing and no lights.

Thanks in advance.

You will want to contact Digitrax about this problem.

I contacted Digitrax.  They told me to send the decoder in.

I swapped that decoder out for a new I have.

Same problems.  Except I was able to get the headlights to work in two-digit addressing by calling F0.

I think there is something I don't understand that is not explained in any of the instructions.

The great part about Digitrax is that it can so a lot of things.  The downside is that means the learning curve is steeper than other system.

First things first, I would check to make sure you have everything set up properly for programming.  You need an electrically isolated programming track when service mode programming because the signal is not specific to a particular decoder.  Without a programming track, all the locomotives respond and it becomes a mess.

To change an address, I'll summarize what digitrax says:

Step 1: place the locomotive on an electrically isolated programming track

Step 2: Press the "PROG" key to enter programming mode.

Step 3: adjust the Variable being changed by turning the "L" knob in either direction.  Turn the knob until you find the variable "Ad2", this is the two digit addressing feature.  You want 4 digit addressing, which can be accessed by pressing down on the "R" knob once, the display should then read, "Ad4==".

Step 4: Change the programming mode to the best setting for the decoder being used.  For recent Digitrax decoders, Direct Programming mode is recommended.  Toggle between programming modes using the "PROG" key.

Step 5: Enter the address with the keypad.  You can use the knobs, but it's easier just to punch it in.

Step 6: Press the enter key and the throttle should display "Ad2=0wr" for two digit addressing or "Ad4=0wr" for four digit addressing.  A blinking square should follow.  This is the throttle adjusting the decoder.  Once done, 2 digit addressing is complete, but 4 digit addressing has an additional step:

Step 7: (4 digit addressing only):  The throttle will display "Ad4on?=y"  This is asking you to program CV29 to 038 so that the decoder will work on 128 speed steps.  Press "Y +" key to automatically set CV29 to 038.  This needs to be done within 6 seconds or the throttle will make you do it over.

Before exiting, there's a footnote for those using a DB150 as a command station.  Track power needs to be turned back on before the programming has been completed, press "PWR" then "Y +" and then "PWR" again.

After this, then you can press "EXIT" to get out of programming mode.

This is how I've interpreted the directions according to Digitrax.  I hope this can help solve your issue.

James:

I have been all through that.  Though I was not aware of the six second time frame on programming CV29.

I will check up on that one.  I might have waited too long figuring out what I was supposed to do.

I have a programming track set up.  That really isn't an issue right now.  I have only one locomotive with a decoder in it, out of 23.  Obviously, I want to get all the bugs worked out on this one before tackling all the others.  Few of the remaining locomotives are DCC ready, so I will be getting into the modifications necessary to convert non-DCC ready locomotives to DCC.

I used DCC on my previous On30 layout.  All those locomotives had the decoders installed by Bachmann.  I only used two-digit programming because all the locomotives had two-digit road numbers.

I woke up at 2:00AM this morning wondering if I had restored track power after programming.  I think I did.  I obviously did when I used the two-digit programming.  Its a sure thing the loco is not going far without track power.

I am a bit frustrated that Digitrax changes other characteristics when an address change is made.  Obviously, when I programmed the decoder to address 40, the power curve changed, as did the control scheme for the lights.  The changes work fine, but I would like to be the one who makes them.

Thanks for the help.

FIXED!!!

Thanks, James for your help.  Making sure CV29 was set right was the ticket.  Apparently I was not getting to the Y+/- button fast enough.  Going in and programming it manually did the trick.

Also hitting F0 after exiting Program.  That fixed the lights.

That six seconds goes by very fast for us old guys.

The other good news is that I managed to get the shell off the LifeLike SD-7.  What a pain.  But it turned out that locomotive (which I love) is DCC ready.  So I plugged a decoder into it, programmed it, and it is now operational.

There will be photos on the HO OO thread.  Look for Progress on Henderson Bay.

The sequel:

By becoming familiar with CV29 I was able to figure out how to reverse the NDOT for the SD-7.
