During a mountainbike tour in France I came across the remains of an old cableway.
It was in the area of Briancon.
I hardly doubt it was an early ski-lift and I know there were some mining activities in that area so my guess is it was used for a mining operation.
There were also some buildings situated around the cableway which could be used for mining.
All is not certain cause there are also many old military buildings in that region.
I don't understand how it works.
See photo above and under.
The upper cable is not moving and looks like fixed in the concrete.
The lower-cable goes around the big wheel.
But how do you get any buckets through the steel construction of the mast?
And what is the purpose of the upper-cable which is also bigger in diameter?
This was the first mast from above.
See also the next photo's.
Same mast, different angle:
The next photo's where taken a bit further down the hill.
One mast stands on what I think is an old military building.
