Have bought an orphan shell of a brass 900 Class diesel,
by Alco Australia, manufactured by Ajin.

Shell is banged up with some minor detail parts missing.
Have already built a drive, using brass sheet and NOS Ajin trucks + drive parts.

However, I am unable to find any pictures of the model online...
There are plenty of pictures of the prototype online.

Maybe one of our members from Down Under has one of those,
or has archieved pictures?

Hi corv8,


Eddie said you need some help with info on your 900 class shell.
 
The 900 class is a SAR loco, most were scrapped and only two saved, now in a museum.
I will check out the museum for you and send the link.

I model different trains around the world.
 
Just bought a Mehano prestige ICE 3 8 car set, only one power unit,
plan to buy an early Christmas present, to buy the second power unit.

Also have the Thaly's TGV 13 car set.
Model American and English as well, on top of course, Aussie trains.

I think there are even three of them left, not bad for only ten built.

One of them allegedly will be converted to standard gauge....  ???

I found some interesting pictures on Google Images ... I'd never seen a 900 before.  :us:

























You reminded me in one of your other build Threads Gerold, of 'Duplicolour' rattle-cans ...  L:

... my Dad used to always use them on car repairs & SWORE  :P  by their 'stickiness' ... or whatever !  ;)



I painted some steel chair frames about 20 years ago, with some white 'Duplicolour' ...

... it's still on there, hard as nails & no rust coming through.  :)



I think my UK supplier CPC might sell the brand & their 'Etching Primer' as well ...

... gonna check 'em out again.  :thumb:

Si,

Had her running two days ago, DCC and all,
but motor was to high and cardan shafts at a too steep angle...
had to cut a hole in the floor to lower the motor.
Next trial in ten minutes!

When you look at the picture of the two sun bleached locos,
with the little pickup to the right,
it's obvious that the carbody has a smaller cross section than an US diesel.
(Compare Blomberg truck size with carbody)

My first idea was to utilize a Proto E-7 chassis,
but no way to get this into the small body...
So she got a set of correct Ajin trucks I pirated from an Overland drive.

A fascinating prototype...
Think I will paint her in the original red + silver scheme,
but will letter her for my private road.

Update...

Runs fine, almost noiseless now with the straight drive shafts.

However, body has to be raised a little, as the pilot touches the rails sometimes.

Three weeks ago I used the body as a test mule, for a Tamiya rattle can, aluminum silver.

Test went well, paint looks smooth and uniform,
much better than most silver paints, which show an undesirable "metallic" glittering effect.

So continued with Duplicolor dark red (leftover from an Rock Island Oil Electric) also a success.

If I would have taken more care when masking, the paint would have been superb... 
So I had to touch up in various places.

Then had the challenge of finding substitute parts for missing wire mesh screens, and fans...
Cannibalized an old Athearn F7 shell for the fans,
and butchered a heavy duty hydraulic filter from an earth moving machine... 
This had a nice fine stainless mesh, folded around the main filter body... 
Had to flatten the mesh, but this went well.

Body is loose on the drive for pics only.
Will add glazing, decals and couplers this evening.

You're right that photos of the model are hard to find Gerold,
but I came across this Ajin based one by an Australian modeller, Shane McCormack. 





It would appear to have been shown at the "Modelling the Railways of South Australia Convention, 2017",
and if it's of any interest to you, you might get more information through them at

Thanks - you are a better researcher than me.
I only found some resin kits of this thing online.

The picture you have posted is definitely the same model as mine,
down to the spring loaded, two part cab door.

They even have painted the silver stripe differently on the sides and the nose,
apparently to simulate stainless steel panels.

And I now notice, my model still lacks the small "skirts" at the rear end.

Hello Gerold,

I am from Adelaide, South Australia, home of the 900 class,
built at South Australian Railways, Islington Workshops,
using English Electric components.

They were a great locomotive.

Yours is certainly a banged up model,
it may or may not concern you, especially as you have painted it,
but there is something wrong with your nose/wind screen area,
it should be flatter.

I thought it may have been camera angle,
but the mis-shape appears the same in all the photos.

Those models are something of 'holy grail' status down here,
when they come up for sale they go for ridiculous dollars,
and you bought one in Vienna.

???

I don't have one but know a few that do.
 
Are you after any particular detail photo or just general photo's?

You are correct about the silver colours,
the flat side panels and doors were Stainless Steel,
and the nose V was painted silver.
 
I have a resin body kit to build up,
but alas, no brass version.

You are correct,
something is wrong with the windshield area.
Wasn't so obvious before painting...

I haven't seen accident marks,
no idea what's the history of it.

Think I leave it as is,
I am not enthusiastic to hammer on it now after painting.

I bought it at ebay in Germany,
with a number of unrelated Overland parts.

I have seen pictures of the resin model online,
it sells for top bucks too!

By chance, I have a good friend in Adelaide,
who volunteered to order SAR decals for me locally (at Ozrail)
I guess they were done for the resin version?

After interruptions due to other projects, family, job, adapting a room for model RR use...... 
Made up my mind to finish her.

Fabricated the missing rear skirts and the fuel tank, added lead weights,
applied decals I got from Adelaide, with the help of my friends Russ & Ray.

Now only the wiring for the LEDs has to be connected,
and tank attached to the underbody.

Ken, Doug, I appreciate your kind words.  
Will upload more photos from my files.


First trials just now... 
Some adjustments, tinkered with light functions,
now I am really happy.

Have set light functions so I can control everything manually,
no goofy directional changing of lights.
 
And both the number board on the cab roof,
and the marker lights are controlled individually.

And, she has a working backup light.
